Yesterday Frank Stasio’s The State of Things had John Shelton Reed and Dale Volberg Reed on to discuss their new book, Holy Smoke: The Big Book of North Carolina Barbecue. Featured in the book are several pages on Raleigh’s own Ed Mitchell.
Also in the book and on the radio show, the Reeds discuss how one of the best ketchup sauces (sacrilege in N.C.), Bone Sucking Sauce, is “ironically made in Raleigh.” Personally, Bone Sucking Sauce may be good on ribs, but it isn’t coming near my pulled pork, ever. The Reeds also discuss the fabled difference between mayonnaise slaw and marinated slaw (marinated for me, but I was born in Charlotte).
