Politics

Editorial: Hands Tied

If you’ve driven down Western Boulevard or across the Boylan Bridge in the past few days, you may have seen the state of North Carolina demolishing several buildings and digging a gigantic hole next to Central Prison. Property owners in Boylan Heights have taken notice to this as well. The neighborhood has formed an ad hoc committee to explore the impacts of an impending 360,000+ square foot prison medical facility--a facility funded by tax dollars that neighboring property owners weren’t notified about by anyone.

The News and Observer and WRAL have been made aware of the situation, but as of right now, neither have touched this story. The neighborhood has organized a meeting for tonight which will include Mayor Charles Meeker, Councilman Thomas Crowder and representatives from the Department of Correction. Still nothing.

I spoke on the phone yesterday with Larry Wann, project manager with the Department of Correction, and he confirmed that there was in fact a public meeting and public presentation for the project in June of last year. I would like the think that an organization such as the N&O is smart enough to have someone reading the Council’s agenda and attending its meetings.

I can’t wait to hear the explanation from John Drescher on this one. From what I can gather, the News & Observer has but one choice: apologize to its readers, and claim that it had no knowledge of the project.

I’m going ahead and calling bullshit right now. The News & Observer’s lack of coverage on this is unacceptable. City and state politicians knew about the project. The media knew about it, but no one was allowed to say anything. Taxpayers and property owners deserved to know about this project. Where’s big media when informing the public really matters? (Probably off hashing out the gory details of Eve Carson’s autopsy.)

That’s why I read New Raleigh - the news and information I’m interested in is not available on WRAL or the N&O;.  Sad but true.

Its good to see NR offering editorials rather than maintaining (as much as possible) an information clearing house about the good, the bad and the ugly in Raleigh.....keep it up guys…

Yeah, my last job was at a local media production facility. I want give their names but you might recognize them as (ABC 11 Eyewitness News, Disney Owned). Number 1: all they look for are increased ratings and try to beat WRAL. 2: Most of the news format is based on what Disney-paid consultants suggest. 3: They are trying to be a CNN, or World News for the triangle area. 4: If it isn’t annouced on a police scanner, news stations want even know about it. 5: The N&O;is going out of business or is about to.

Yeah, solid write up Mark and a frickin good question to what is happening.

    I find the N&O;to be quite useful…

    ...under our cat boxes.

Why was this major story not covered in the N&O;? Craigslist, that’s why. Nobody is paying to advertise in the N&O;classifieds any more, so reporters are being laid off.

I can’t imagine that the N&O;knew about this and decided not to cover it. What would induce them to make that decision other than a cash payment? No, this is one of the casualties of the cutbacks in local reporting. This fell through the cracks because it is not a commercial deal, so involvement of the City government was minimal, and nobody was watching closely enough. It’s shocking, nonetheless.

I have a lot of sympathy for Mr. Drescher. It seems that he is being asked by McClatchy to manage the gradual atrophy of what has been a great institution. I wish instead they would explore the idea of raising subscription rates. It is still awfully cheap. I would rather pay more to be on top of what is happening in Raleigh than pay less for a lot of fluff.

This trend only makes blogs like New Raleigh even more important. Thank you, Mark, for this story.

Given that the State is not responsible to conforming to local zoning regulations, I’m not surprised this slipped past everyone.  The N&O;will be happy to report on the outcome of this contentious issue, I’m sure. But the last thing the N&O;is going to do is START a fight between citizens and our permanent out-of-town guests known as our legislators.

We’ve received emails at RDUwtf.com asking us to write about this meeting and about how blindsided the neighborhood was by this project.  We wrote about this project almost a month ago (http://rduwtf.com/blog1/?p=132) after seeing the demolition and calling the prison to ask what the hubub was all about.  They didn’t hesitate to tell us that a hospital was being built on the site.  I have a hunch this is a pissing match between the State and the Cities building regulations.  That is an ongoing issue with State development downtown.  Deborah Ross might be able to answer that question.

Three days later, the News and Observer felt this was worth their time. I use the word “time” loosely, as their 184 word blurb hardly qualifies as coverage. I’m sure we’ll all be waiting on the edge of our seats for the in-depth coverage they’ll have of the meeting. smile

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Before the N&0;bashing gets outta control let’s slow down a bit. I’m pretty sure you all should see something in print about it in the N&O;tomorrow. I’m sure a reporter will be at the meeting, and broadcast reporters, too. Times are changing in the print news industry and everyone involved is figuring out how to adapt. And, no disrespect to New Raleigh, but anyone who gets all of their local news from one source runs the risk of being under informed if not misinformed. It takes a careful reader who combs the stories of a variety of media outlets to determine the “truth,” if you will. You should even read national reports from media outlets that don’t jibe with your ideology.
As for the schaudenfrede over the N&O;’s tough times, you all should be warned. First, what the N&O;is experiencing is an industry-wide issue.

Second, the survival of the newspaper, in some form, is vital to help ensure the existence of democracy and is an essential part of democracy itself.

To eliminate the vessels that help make that a reality only weakens the entire fourth estate — a safeguard against malversation and one of the best forums for a free exchange of ideas and information.

And the newspaper is still the best bang for your buck. What other product priced at $.50 offers so much for the buyer? None. Despite its shortcomings, you all should be trying to help save the mainstream press. For your own sake.

Rob, did the RDU WTF feed address change?  I haven’t seen a post from you guys since May, and now that I go to the website you’ve got a bunch…

...ah, it looks like it has.  Fixed it in my reader.

  • Jason!07/22 02:43 PM

But now the site is down.  WTF?

  • netposer07/22 07:03 PM

How is this new about the main stream media.

Do you think they give a fuck about their audience other than ratings?

8:17 PM “Could a sex offender be in your house? Tune in at 11”
11:22 PM They tell you that a repairmen you hired could have been a sex offender.

WTF. Fuck WRAL and all the rest of the phony “news” stations in the Triangle and everywhere else.

  • GY07/22 09:46 PM

I swear I picked up my paper yesterday and I thought the Ad-Pak was making a comeback. It will be difficult for the N&O;to cover much in Raleigh due to the fact that they are outsourcing so much to Charlotte and their top writer go by the name AP.
