The February (print) issue of Southern Living magazine has featured a handful of local Raleigh businesses. Many of the businesses featured are in the downtown area and the magazine states that the “Capital city is as vibrant as ever, especially with these five favorite ways to put pizzazz in a February day.”
Included are a couple of New Raleigh favorites including Escazu Chocolates, Holly Aiken Stitch and Boylan Bridge Brewpub. Also featured are the Krispy Kreme Challenge and Yates Mill.

Hurray for Stitch and BBB, although I can think of far better hikes than Yates Mill, namely, our own 50+ mile segment of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail at Falls Lake and the Sycamore Creek/Company Mill loop at Umstead State Park.
Props to all who got a mention, but BBB is a big miss as far as I’m concerned. Food = bad, Beer = worse. They should be thanking their lucky stars they have that million-dollar view.
Tony: I agree. I can only imagine how that place would be doing if the beer and food improved.
I will say the couple times I have eaten there- it hasn’t been terrible, but it wasn’t something to tell people about either.
The view saves them for sure!
hooray raleigh! however i agree with tony and gd about bbb…i have never been able to order the beer of my choosing…they are always out of AT LEAST one beer…often times more. and with only 5-6 beers on their list, thats quite a disappointment.
Is BBB really that bad? We tried going three times in the 6 months after they opened and couldn’t get served, even with only half the tables occupied and a platoon of servers. We haven’t been back, but I was hoping things had improved. I live in Boylan Heights, so I drive/ride past there a lot. For the past couple of months there will sometimes be one or two, or NO customers sitting in there at 11pm on a weeknight. Last Friday night they were closed and dark by midnight. Some nights in December they were dark at 6 or 7pm when I was coming in from work. Surely people don’t ONLY go when it is warm and they can sit outside?
Thats the only reason to go IMO Micah. The view is great as we all know. The service and the quality of the product you receive is or at least, can be dismal.
Hooray for Escazu! Their chocolates are awesome. If you haven’t been there do yourself a favor and check them out. As for BBB I must concur with others. Put that place in any other location and they would have been out of business months ago.
Boylan is awesome, wtf are you people talking about? the food is simple, but quality and very tasty. the beer is great, the staff is super nice, and even sitting inside is enjoyable. outside is just awesome. i never heard anything bad about it…
I agree w/ Jeff. As with many places, I had never heard a negative thing about it until reading the comments on this web site.
I have heard so many bad things about them, and noticing how they are frequently empty or closed during what should be peak times, it makes me want to stick up for them even though I have had bad experiences there…Just because I feel sorry for them.
I have TRIED To like it, but each time I go, I am disappointed. food and beer wise.
i just stopped going because of how bad the staff and quality of products have been on my visits.
My BBB 2 cents: The food is mostly mediocre. The fish and chips are a joke. I disagree about the beer. There are several that I like. Some that I don’t. I think that their problem is that the brew certain British styles that are not trendy. But they do taste authentic.
So if I understand right BBB does nothing very well that a restaurant should be doing. When the people of raleigh start promoting and spending their money in places that make good food and give good service maybe the food scene will improve overall. Until then I guess we will be stuck with an abundance of frozen prepackaged garbage served by someone who really does not care, but with a view, of the train tracks. On the other hand glad to see stitch and escazu talked up. Nice to see people who have worked hard and built something good get some recognition.
I live close enough to the Brewpub to crawl home, but rarely do for the same reasons mentioned above.
The beer is acceptable, but food and wine selection are terrible. Some staff is nice, some isn’t - like in most places.
gd put it best: I tried to like it, but got repeatedly disappointed.
BBB: The food quality is all over the place. Sometimes it’s amazing, then you go back an it’s terrible. Their fries used to be crave-worthy, now they are straight from the freezer and horrible. Their hamburger buns are like hockey pucks. Last time I was there I had to order a veggie burger on bread because the last few buns I had were awful.
I feel like the owner is a stubborn mule and will not listen to what his customers want. After being open a year they STILL do not have highchairs. How do you expect to have a neighborhood following in a neighborhood full of young families if you’re unwilling to accommodate them?
One other thing about the brewpub: Based on what I heard, it seems that the owner is not really in it for the money - he owns the property, he just does what HE thinks is right, and enjoys running a brewpub, whether it is successful or not . This might explain the lack of response to comments like high chairs or bad food. Seems like a respectable approach in theory, but the outcome unfortunately isn’t great.
I don’t know why there’s so much debating about Boylan Bridge Brewpub, when the real odd thing about that article is that they have Krispy Kreme on there. It’s an international chain that is no way unique to Raleigh. Maybe something better would have been the Cupcake Shoppe or Hayes Barton Dessertery.
Just my thought.
If you read the actual article you will see that they are highlighting the Krispy Kreme Challenge which is indeed unique to Raleigh.
