Faces Lounge and ‘Round Midnight Diner Coming Soon to Salisbury Street

Over the past six years, Downtown Raleigh has continued to grow and new businesses seem to pop up almost weekly. Most of these businesses over this time period have been restaurants and bars, but a large percentage of them seem to be able to survive the continuous competition from new spots that pop up each month. The key to success in many of these new businesses is two things: fabulous food or drinks and a good location. Some of the places that have lasted, seem to be the ones that have one of those keys to success but most are the ones that have both.

For a long time, anything that opened too far off of Fayetteville Street had a hard time making business work. But, in the past few years, Fay St has been relegated and other pockets of activity have sprung up (Warehouse District, Hargett Street and Wilmington Street). Although only one street off of Fayetteville, Salisbury Street doesn't tend to have a lot of storefronts for commercial activity. But, in the past year or two, a few places have started opening along this corridor, making use of the space as much as possible. From The Raleigh Convention Center, to Capital Club 16 (technically on Martin at the corner), to Raleigh CrossFit all opening in the past few years, Salisbury could be a new corridor of activity.

One spot that has popped up great restaurants over these past six years, none of which have made it work is the 100 block of Salisbury. The building that has successfully housed Subway for years, has also housed a bunch of tasty, yet unsuccesful ventures. The second downstairs spot has been home to a pizza and gyro joint and most recently, and not for long, a restaurant called Healthy Track. Upstairs has always been restaurants that were downtown favorites including Baba Gahnouj and Taste of India. Unfortunately, neither of those restaurants survived and were both not in business very long.

Now, there's hope for this building. Coming soon to these available spaces on the 100 block will be Faces Lounge and 'Round Midnight Diner. In the past, very little has been done for the interior of these spots and neither space has been open for more than lunch (aside from the very brief time when Taste of India delivered at night). The new businesses will renovate the space and we are very hopeful that Faces Lounge and 'Round Midnight Diner will give life to this side of Downtown Raleigh at night as well. Next up for Salisbury Street to become the new Wilmington Street? Let's get something in the space at the corner of Hargett and Salisbury, the once future home of Waraji's downtown location.

We don't know much more about these two coming businesses and look forward to Faces Lounge and 'Round Midnight opening.  These spaces could add a much needed spark to this part of downtown and expand the night life and restaurant scene of the grid.

First Presbyterian’s new building should help this stretch of the street immensely.  If only someone would do something with the bombed out wreck across the street.
