New Raleigh is pleased to kick off our new Farmers Market Profiles series. Throughout this series New Raleigh will be highlighting a diverse set of vendors that grow, raise, or produce their own products locally. We hope to share with you many of the unique products available—as well as get to know some of the vendors.
Our first profile features Rainbow Meadow Farms of Snow Hill, NC. This family owned eastern North Carolina farm has been operating for the past 262 years. 262 years! That’s love and devotion right there. It’s amazing that this family has been maintaining their farm since 1746.
Rainbow Meadow Farms has a variety of sustainably raised products available including chicken, lamb, pork, turkey, eggs, specialty items, and raw pet food. The farm is dedicated to sustainable practices in a humane and respectful environment. A slow growth process is maintained by grass feeding and raising their animals on open pasture. No hormones or antibiotics are added and all of their products are USDA inspected.
Over in the indoor section of the Farmers Market, Sandra Garner of Rainbow Meadow Farms is happy to “meet people from the city” and tell them about her farm. The family raises their livestock because they are “concerned about what we feed our family and others,” says Mrs. Garner. “For sustainability, we believe in keeping a local agricultural infrastructure.” Rainbow Meadow Farms has been marketing their meats for the past 12 years.
The farm offers many interesting gourment lamb, chicken, and pork sausages. These include:
- mint, garlic and wine lamb sausage
- parsley and cheese lamb sausage
- pork chorizo
- chicken and pork brautwurst
- Italian sausages
Rainbow Meadow Farms also sells at Chatham Market Place in Pittsboro as well as to several restaurants in the triangle area.
If you’re into delicious meats check out Sandra Garner from Rainbow Meadow Farms. If you’re lucky she might give you a sample off the knife.

The meats I have had from Rainbow Meadow Farms are *vastly* better than any supermarket products. There is simply no comparison. The difference is *pasture* and it shows in the taste.
Don’t bother with Whole Foods. They label their industrially produced, corn-fed meats “all natural” but that means nothing—they’re still raised in feedlots.
And “free range” on the egg carton is nearly meaningless, too. It indicates theoretical access to the outdoors, such as the side of a chicken house with 10,000 birds open to a small outdoor area.
The only way to know you are getting good meat or eggs is to know the farmer and understand their operation. See the place yourself, or at least view their pictures.
Rainbow Meadow can pass every test. And when you taste the difference—you will know you are really living!
I bought some lamb for the first time there this weekend. Ms. Garner was just as sweet as can be and I ended up buying much more meat than I originally intended thanks to her salesmanship. And let me tell you, those lamb riblets were just about the best eating I’ve had in a long time. I’m not going to bother buying lamb from anywhere else now! Can’t wait to cook up that beef tongue next!
