The Coalition to Unchain Dogs not only goes around building fences to help free dogs, they’re also sponsoring an awesome concert with Superchunk this Saturday, Aug. 29, at Durham Central Park. The Kinksmen, Regina Hexaphone and Rey Norteno are also on the bill. The doors open at 4:00 and show starts around 4:45. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Amanda Arrington from the Coalition to Unchain Dogs answered Five Questions for New Raleigh about why keeping dogs off of chains is important.
1. What is the Coalition to Unchain Dogs? Where and how do you work?
The Coalition to Unchain Dogs is a non-profit, volunteer effort dedicated to improving the welfare of dogs living outdoors on chains in and around the Triangle region of North Carolina. In just over two years, we have freed over 300 dogs from their chains, but many more are still waiting.
Our three-tiered mission:
-Raise money and build fences for chained dogs in the community
-Provide support to and educate the community as to why chaining is cruel and dangerous and raise awareness of the physical, mental and emotional needs of dogs
-Advocate for the passing of laws that disallow or severely restrict the chaining of dogs
2. Why is it important to unchain dogs?
There are so many negatives associated with chaining dogs. One, dogs are not protected - they are open to attack from other animals and ill intentioned people when if they are in a fence they have a protective barrier; they are also in danger of their chains getting tangled, embedded collars and throat damage from pulling at the end of a chain. Two, the community is much safer when dogs are either inside the home or behind a fence. Chained dogs often become aggressive, and unsuspecting people, often times children, can walk into the path of a chained dog and be hurt (this happens often and there are multiple children across N.C. that have been injured and even killed by chained dogs). Three, dogs are much happier when they have room to move around, play and just be a dog.
3. How did the concert come about, and how did Superchunk get involved?
This is the 3rd annual benefit concert and is a annual fundraiser the Coalition puts on. Superchunk agreed to play as we have a mutual friend and one of the band members is very passionate about the issue of chained dogs.
4. Are you planning any other concerts/events?
We have mulitple fundraisers each year and people can stay updated by becoming a fan of us Facebook or checking our website at http://www.unchaindogs.org.
5. What can people do to help your organization (volunteer, donate, etc.)?
People can volunteer, donate and advocate. We can be contacted via our website for anyone that is interested in any of the above.
Also, Regina Hexaphone will be on the Local Beat this coming Friday on WKNC to chat a bit more about this show. Tune in!
Thanks to Councilor Nancy McFarlane for leading the effort to get the Raleigh City Council to adopt a dog-tethering ordinance!! Having organizations like Coalition to Unchain Dogs definitely made passing (and now enforcing) the ordinance a lot easier. Cheers for the compassion for animals and concern for community.
CHEERS to this! Great to know about the effort.
Thank you Amanda for all that you do for dogs and animal rights!
This is a good cause but most of these dog owners should not even have pets.
