G. Milton Small Building on Goodnight, Raleigh

One of my favorite Raleigh haunts on the web is Goodnight, Raleigh!.  The site captures the energy of Raleigh nights in a unique way.
Recently the site featured the G. Milton Small Building that sits on Brooks Ave. near Hillsborough Street. I love this building so much.  In addition to the structure itself, the ground beneath the structure features a beautiful Koi pond.

Check out Goodnight, Raleigh!

Great site and easily the most beautifully orchestrated building in Raleigh (as far as modernism is concerned).  This is the first building I take archie friends when they come into town. They rarely leave without walking through the yard and up the stairs.

Speaking of Roller Derby, I am going to have to go with Dorton Arena for most beautifully orchestrated modernist building.  (Not to mention the most historically significant!)

I can’t disagree Mark, but then again they are in two different categories of size and modernist orchestration.

On the note of Dorton, I did see Wayne Place’s lecture at the Design School two weeks ago in which he devoted 25 minutes to Dorton.  He has done recent 3d models and analysis of the original structure to see its “flaws” and what could be done with modern technology today.  It is a case study in his new Structures book.  Appreciation of that building grows daily.
