Welcome to our “Get to know a DJ” column. This month we’re profiling two special gentlemen: DJ SPCLGST (aka Joseph Giampino) and Thien Lu, whose handle is simply Thien (of those Blacklisted parties you’ve heard so much about). We welcome you to get to know them. We’d also like to hear from you, our readers, about DJs you know. Are you friends with a DJ? Hit us up!

Thien
How long have you been DJing?
On and off for the past 8 years.
Where/when do you DJ?
The only consistent gig is every First Friday at Blacklisted (Five Star) and whenever else I can con someone into listening to what I want to play.
What kind of equipment do you use?
The usual tools of the trade ..... Other people’s music.
What are your favorite songs to play?
Anything conducive to a hot, sweaty, dance crazed atmosphere!
Do you ever get tired of playing certain songs? If so, which ones and why?
I love everything I play. If I don’t, I don’t play it. It’s important for me to share something new with the crowd with the slight possibility some might enjoy it as much as I do. It’s a big risk to take here in Raleigh but it’s an opportunity to break the monotonous stereotype of what’s expected to be heard when you go out to have a good time.
When DJing, surely you must have to use the restroom or take a breather. What kind of “break” songs (at least 8 minutes long) do you play to help to you out?
No time for such trivial things as human necessities. The party comes first!
Do you drink on the job?
Nada. Just the bad habit of cancer sticks.
What was the best time you had DJing?
Every time my compadres and I are killing it and the crowd is reciprocating the enthusiasm.
What was the worst time you had DJing?
When people just aren’t getting it.
Anything you’d like to say to your listening public?
Get some nuts!

DJ SPCLGST
How long have you been DJing?
I started DJing when we would sit for hours in a moldy cellar digging for vinyl gems. Those were the days.
Where/when do you DJ?
I’m the special guest. I’m on every bill, worldwide. But seriously, I’m part of the National BBoy League, so whenever there is a battle I am sure to be there. I also work closely with Redbull Music Academy so you can catch me with a can of it whenever there is an event. I also play in many clubs throughout North Carolina, and have held residencies in Philadelphia as well as New York city. If you look you will find me.
What kind of equipment do you use?
Two iPods, too many jokes. I use Technic 1200’s, a Rane TTM56 and Ortofon scratch needles.
What are your favorite songs to play?
We’re Almost There (Spinna Remix) by Jackson 5, California Soul (Diplo Remix) by Marlena Shaw, Vitamin C by Can, Music Sounds Better With You by Stardust
Do you ever get tired of playing certain songs? If so, which ones and why?
I try to not to get tired of playing certain tracks because I play what makes me happy. And even when I have to play for a certain type of crowd, I try to play even harder and rock it in a way that boggles minds.
When DJing, surely you must have to use the restroom or take a breather. What kind of “break” songs (at least 8 minutes long) do you play to help to you out?
I don’t take breaks. I wear a diaper. But when I forget to wear one, I use the DJSK… Rapper’s Delight.
Do you drink on the job?
I don’t drink.
What was the best time you had DJing?
Every time is the best time. That’s the way it should be.
What was the worst time you had DJing?
When you are not there. I miss your pretty face.
Anything you’d like to say to your listening public?
Keep your ears to the ground. Love the music you play. Ladies, I do bite. Odio.
