Madison Bullard, aka Hidden Cat, has been making a name for himself in a short amount of time. With stints in New York and as recently as Signalfest in Chapel Hill, Bullard is working it. Within 3 months, he has remixed Portishead’s The Rip, which Rolling Stone magazine called “An icy and awe-inspiring remix, transforming the song from desolate to danceable.” Later this year, French label Boxon Records will release a compilation called “Boxon Makes Me Crazy” which will include a Hidden Cat track dubbed “The Superfuture.” The song is already making its rounds on BBC1.
May is looking to be a busy month for Bullard. He recently completed a remix for acclaimed producer/DJ Andy Caldwell from California, which will be released on the single from Caldwell’s new album in May. Hidden Cat will be DJing here in Raleigh as part of WKNC’s new monthly dance party at the Hive on May 23rd. Get yourself a little more familiar with Madison before he brings you to the floor.

How long have you been DJing?
I’ve been DJing for just over a year, but producing for about four.
Where/when do you DJ?
I DJ wherever people ask me to, whenever I can. That takes me around the state, and earlier this year in NYC.
What kind of equipment do you use?
I use Traktor Pro and a UC-33e MIDI controller.
What are your favorite songs to play?
My favorite songs differ from night to night, but lately have been on the weirder side of electro. The Das Glow remix of The Faint’s “Mirror Error” comes to mind.
Do you ever get tired of playing certain songs? If so, which ones and why?
I’m getting pretty tired of the really hard electro style, with really distorted synths and no dynamics but REALLY LOUD.
When DJing, surely you must have to use the restroom or take a breather. What kind of “break” songs (at least 8 minutes long) do you play to help to you out?
The Juan Maclean - Happy House is 12 minutes long. That always allows plenty of time…
Do you drink on the job?
I’m 19 so…...no.
What was the best time you had DJing?
My friend threw a party in his basement up in Boone. It seemed like everyone I knew was there and everyone had a great time.
What was the worst time you had DJing?
New Years Eve I DJed a party outside. It was about 13 degrees. I was miserable.
Anything you’d like to say to your listening public?
My remix for Andy Caldwell is out on his new single on Salted Records soon! Keep a look out for it.
