Have a Seat NC - Bus Bench Design Charette

imageRaleigh’s bus system is in many ways inadequate for its present and growing population. Along with an unreliable schedule, less than 10% of Raleigh bus stops have benches. The , along with Have a Seat NC, is hosting a design charrette to address this problem.

Everyone in the community is invited to participate in the event by contributing design ideas for bus benches that will be built and installed at four stops around Raleigh. A degree in architecture is not required, only a desire to enhance our public transit system one bench at a time.  RSVP HERE.

Have A Seat / Young Architects Forum Inaugural Bus Bench Design Charrette
Saturday May 3rd @ 2pm
Brooks Hall Rotunda (3rd Floor)
NC State University
Raleigh

The Young Architects Forum is hosting a design charrette at North Carolina State University’s College of Design’s Rotunda, Brooks Hall, on Saturday May 3, 2008. This open forum offers anyone in the community a chance to contribute designs and ideas for new bus benches that will ultimately be built and installed by the public, in cooperation with the city, through Have a Seat NC!  YAF will supply a range of design materials and refreshments for participants, since great design works up great appetites.

Please visit Have A Seat NC for more details about the upcoming charrette. It’s going to be a festive and productive event, and we’re counting on the N&O to help us spread the news. If we can raise enough local interest in our plans, we’ve got high hopes for the continuation of the “Have A Seat” project in the future.

For more information about this great project, please contact Cydney Clemons, Assoc. AIA, at

Brooks Hall is entered from Pullen Road by the roundabout. Enter the domed building and go up the stairs on the right to find the rotunda.

I just want to say a big ‘Thank you’ to NewRaleigh for helping get the word out.  The charrette yesterday was well-attended and I think some really great ideas were generated.  Keep an eye on the site http://www.haveaseatnc.com for photos of the event and designs, as well updates on construction and installation later this summer!
