Help Local Charities Assist Those In Need

So this is Christmas, and what have you done? If your answer is “not enough” don’t sweat it. There’s still time to get into the spirit of giving and help out those in need over the holidays. With the economic downturn causing so many to tighten their belts, many charitable organizations are struggling to meet their goals and donations are on the decline. According to an annual report released earlier this year by the Giving USA Foundation, 53% of organizations that work to meet people’s basic needs, such as food, clothing, and shelter, are underfunded for 2009. For those in Raleigh looking to make a difference, and willing to open their hearts and wallets, there are many local charities from which to choose. And for those of a less altruistic nature…remember, it’s December and charitable donations are tax deductible!

Here’s a list of some local organizations that would be more than happy to accept your gifts now, or at any other time of the year, and put them to good use.

Helping Hand Mission - This organization, established in 1972, provides food and clothing to those in need, assists victims of fires, handicapped, and disabled individuals, and trains and educates the unemployed to help them become self-sufficient. They accept reusable items from Wake and surrounding counties, and will pick up large donations such as furniture or appliances. They also provide holiday meals for those in need, so if a monetary donation is not feasible, those interested in helping may also be able to volunteer their time.

Raleigh Rescue Mission  - Since it first began providing assistance to the homeless 50 years ago, the Raleigh Rescue Mission has helped more than 100,000 individuals to rebuild their lives. The Mission provides emergency housing, food, and medical and mental healthcare, as well as drug and alcohol rehabilitation services. The organization also assists individuals as they transition back into the community by way of adult education.

United Way of the Greater Triangle - According to their mission statement, the United Way’s goal is “to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities.” Last year, the United Way of the Greater Triangle provided assistance to more than 300,000 people in need across Durham, Johnston, Orange and Wake counties. To see exactly how your donation dollars could help others check out this link.

SPCA of Wake County  - If people just aren’t your cup of tea, there are always animals that are in need of help and care. The SPCA of Wake County is a no-kill animal shelter that has been aiding homeless critters since it was founded in Raleigh in 1967. Every year, the SPCA helps to find homes for more than 3,000 animals. The organization also focuses on outreach programs emphasizing pet adoption and public education. There is a need for donations and volunteers throughout the year, and they are currently attempting to raise $16,000 towards the purchase of a heated van for animal transport.

These are just a few of the many local organizations that are accepting donations and volunteers. If none of these strike your fancy, but you are still itching to contribute, there are abundant opportunities to help. Try checking the City of Raleigh’s website for volunteer needs, checking craigslist or just asking around.

I’ve been a supporter of the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle for over 5 years. Great local hunger relief organization.  http://www.foodshuttle.org

I’ve been playing christmas carols on my T-bone in downtown Raleigh as of late and plan to donate any tips I get to the Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network. It’s a win win situation. I get to enjoy playing my music and hopefuly entertain a few people along the way, and any money earned goes towards a good charity.
