High Gravity Beer Three Years Later; World Beer Festival Raleigh

This May will mark the three year anniversary of the bill that was passed ushering in beers over 6.0% to be sold in North Carolina stores and restaurants.  North Carolina was one of only 6 states at the time that didn’t allow “high gravity” beers, but three years later the state is a different place.  Many restaurants in Raleigh now serve one or more high alcohol content beers and specialty beer stores have continually stocked their stores with new beers that were not available in the state before 2005.  There are a couple of places in Raleigh that this has greatly helped business as well, including Peace Street Market and The Raleigh Times Bar.

The Raleigh Times is known in Downtown Raleigh as one of the few places to get a large selection of Belgian Beers.  They frequently change their taps with the season or when the mood strikes.  Brooklyn’s Brewmaster’s Revserve Extra Brun and Maredsous 8 are both new on tap and Dekonnick is gone.  Peace Street Market has a larger selection of Belgians than The Raleigh Times Bar but you can’t necessarily sit and enjoy one with a full plate of Pork Nachos there.  The Raleigh Times Bar even has a new blog that chronicles all the new beers they get in and what is to come soon.  They have polls on the site very often and a nicely stated moto:  “A retreat from the world, an oasis, An informational page keeping people abreast of the happenings and goings-ons at the Times as it relates to the world of beer and her lovers.” These are a only two of the many places in Raleigh you can find high gravity beers, the list is long.

Another thing that has benefited greatly from the high gravity beer deregulation is The World Beer Festival in Raleigh.  Over 150 World-Class Breweries Participate in All About Beer Magazine’s World Beer Festival Raleigh.  This will be the third year (coincidence, I think not) that Raleigh will have this event in Moore Square.  Tickets go very quickly and it always sells out.  They go on sale at noon next Wednesday March 26, so to avoid searching Craigslist for expensive tickets in a month, grab yours HERE.

I was bummed to see how much tickets had increased and, of course, they sold out in about two hours. We went to the inaugural Raleigh Beer Fest and had a great time, but I can better spend $40 at Peace Street Market and enjoy a wide selection in my own back yard.

I’m, honestly, finding it hard to stomach the prices at Times… the food is great but, again, I can get a sixer of Bad Penny or Duck Rabbit Milk Stout for less than they charge for two 12-oz. glasses.  42nd Street has pints of Bell’s Amber for $3.50 compared to 12 oz. at Times for $4.25 and I like the atmosphere at the oyster bar just fine.

Can’t wait for Beer Fest. I wish the tickets had been a little cheaper but it’s well worth the price to be in Beer Heaven for a few hours.

Its been 3 years since that law was passed?! Wow I am old.

Its also times like these that make me silently weep i’m no longer in NC.

“The atmosphere at the oyster bar is just fine” That’s great, you go ahead a settle for just fine then. I don’t see how you stomach the food at the oyster bar.
I bet you like guys with visors, white shorts and flops just fine as well.
There are only a few great beer bars in the Triangle, of them only two are great bars altogether. The Times being one. I’ll let you find out the other.

Whoa now paperclip, please ease away from the elitism.  Cydney has a point-prices do run a bit high at the Times.  You’re paying at least a one dollar per beer surchage for coolness and ambiance, if that’s where you find it.  Which apparently is important to you as hopefully you’re able to avoid the ignominious visored, flip-flopped, and white shorted underclass within that bastion of hip.

As to the second great bar altogether you mentioned, I’ll take a stab-The Buckhead Saloon?  wink

Whoa indeed. I’ll take anyone else besides the bloodshot eyed, 12:45 in the morning, weekend cocainer, bud light sweating, hollering goofballs I see at yer oyster bar, Nelson’s, Mellow Mush nuts.
So yeah, I’ll pay a premium for that. I don’t think the times even has bud light for that reason. It’s not elitism at all. There are bars for everyone, like the “Hook Up”. Who’s that place for!?!?
I am a little older now and I still like to drink, however I now like to drink well and avoid the dribble.
Following this site I see that contributors don’t hold many punches. That’s good and I have thick skin. That I can stomach.
    See ya at the Saloon!

Thick skin yes.. but Jim is a reader not a contributor.  Times really isn’t more expensive- they have dank beer at good prices. Oyster bars premium beers are just as expensive. Besides times will serve you a real pint of PBR for $2.  Thats cheaper than any budlight special.
