Located in the historic Briggs Building on Fayetteville Street, The Raleigh City Museum is a small museum with a large amount of important information. Historic image archives, artifacts and exhibits of Raleigh fill the space. This Thursday (January 24th), the museum will host an opening reception for their latest exhibit entitled Higher Education in Raleigh: The Foundations of Legacy. The exhibit will cover the history of various higher education schools in Raleigh including NC State, Shaw University, St. Mary’s, Peace, St. Augustine’s, Latta University, and others.
, the curator for The Raleigh City Museum sent New Raleigh the following description of the exhibit:
“With schools spanning as far back as 1842, the capital city of North Carolina has been host to many firsts in the world of higher education. With six prominent female and African-American colleges and universities all opening before the turn of the century, it was clear that Raleigh had become a hub in the state for more than just politics. And with the charter of the Agriculture & Mechanical College in 1887 (later to become NC State), the foundation had been set for a life long legacy of well-rounded learning that catered to all walks of life. This exhibit will present and explore the rich past of these institutions by offering a glimpse into their academic and social worlds. Higher Education in Raleigh opens on January 26th, and will run through Summer 2008.”
There will be an opening reception on Thursday, January 24th from 6:00-8:00, with remarks from the staff at 6:30.
