H&M Now Open at Crabtree Valley Mall
Advertise on NR

The only H&M store between Richmond, VA and Atlanta, GA will open at noon on Thursday 3/18 at Crabtree Valley Mall. Having just visited NYC and popped into a few of their shops to check our the current stock, I can tell you to expect neon plaids and polos to be in full force as well as the typical abundance of black…and Bart and Homer Simpson t-shirts.

Let us know how the crowds are as we expect the shop to be overloaded for a few days to weeks.

After this store opens, I never want to hear anyone who shops there ever talk about buying local again. This store is the ABSOLUTE opposite of local or sustainable shopping.

Well, at least sustainable in the sense of not having throwaway clothes made by Indonesian children.

I’m not sure what Indonesian children have to do with “sustainability”, but here’s a link to their product policy:  http://www.hm.com/us/corporateresponsibility/aboutourproducts/productpolicy__productpolicy.nhtml

Sorry. I looked at a shirt. It is from Bangladesh.

Only reference to origin is this:
All goods are labelled with their country of origin.

Hey, if you want to be a locavore go for it. If you are OK with your clothes coming from the opposite side of the planet that is your choice. However, the two do not mix.

The two can mix if you don’t get preachy about it.

Wait, this is NR.  Forget it.

  • Adamt
    03/17 10:43 PM

Exactly, Brian. That is my point.

    03/17 10:48 PM

Where did you find an H&M shirt from Bangladesh?

  • Adamt
    03/17 11:29 PM

    @smitty. In my dresser drawer.

Lest I be called a hypocrite, I have no problem with globalization. My criticism is directed toward hypocrites.

Sweet Jesus, why does everything have to become so goddamn preachy?!?!!?

H&M is a GLOBAL company, from Switzerland, that offers pretty decent fashion at pretty decent prices.

I’m sorry, folks, but my wallet does not allow me to ALWAYS shop locally.

But guess what: this is America. GLOBALIZATION is what created this country, and what keeps it going. So CHILL OUT.

And also - I am absolutely excited about this store opening! Tho I will *NOT* be at the grand opening… smile

RaleighMAC - it’s actually Sweden, their from Västerås Sweden.  And since I’m currently here on business - does that mean I’m shopping locally?

And where, Adamt, do you suggest we shop for local clothing if we can’t afford Raleigh Denim or Holly Aiken handbags? If I shop at H&M, does that mean I should stop shopping at the Farmers Market lest I be branded a hypocrite? It’s not all or nothing and that kind of attitute is counter-productive. I salute people for any attempt to buy locally, because it’s small steps that will add up to big change. Oh well, I guess according to you I might as well start buying my produce from South America again and, sorry local breweries, I’m going to switch back to my imports, because god forbid morons like Adamt think I’m a hypocrite.

it’s absolutely obsurd to say the two don’t mix. any local purchase benefits the local seller, reduces the environmental impact, etc. please help me understand why someone who buys a holly aiken bag and wears an h&m dress is a hypocrite, Adamt.

i was passing through crabtree yesterday and saw them preparing for the opening.

outside the store they have the cattle herding lines prepared for the crowd.

ok, i understand the long lines of kids for the lego store when it opened, but really? for a clothing store?

I really don’t get it.  I mean what makes H&M so great?

Hey Dan from Detroit, are you the same Dan from Detroit that I met a couple of months back with the really colorful shoes? Your partner was from Japan. I lost your number when I jumped into a pool with my clothes on. Would love to catch up.

    Uh - what Polly said.

Also, to answer a couple of questions: The cattle herding lines were for the grand opening today at noon. The first 200 people in line would receive something.

What makes them great: Stylish clothes at great prices. They’re not so trendy that you can’t wear them for more than one season - and they actually do last. They also have men’s clothes, kids clothes, accessories, make-up, etc.

So many clothes at the mall seem to be priced highly - so as to allow for discounted sale pricing. At a store like H&M, you don’t have to wait for a sale: it’s already priced that way.

  • gd

as it should be priced low.
    their shit is fugly.

Being a locavore does not help the environment, but it can help the local economy.  If you really want to help the environment, stop buying stuff.

So I looked at H&M’s website and for male attire;  what’s the deal with the short-shorts?  I have no desire to have my blood flow cut off “down there”.

Note the above is just based on what I saw on their website and I’m still willing to go check out the store in person, but short-shorts on guys??  Really?!?

  • abbie
    03/19 12:24 AM

Yeah, but can we get locally made Bart Simpson shirts?  That’s the real question.

  • Dan from Detroit
    03/19 08:50 AM

@ Tony Woodard - nope, been here in Sweden for the past 6 months, but I wish I was since it sounds like you guys had a blast.

    Cheers

The lines are insane.  I really wish they would have added more fitting rooms.  Waited in line for abour 30 minutes on a wed. evening to try on clothes, you’re only allowed to take 7 items in & then you have to wait in line again to check out.  There were about 7 ppl manning the fitting rooms & 1 at the register.  Hope they work this out or it won’t be worth shopping there…

If they are that busy, shoplifting should be a breeze.
