The Miriam Block Gallery is an energetic space that has consistently had great shows sponsored by the Raleigh Arts Commission. This month a mean double feature that is worth seeing- just make sure you get there early, really early- the opening is over at 7pm. The Importance of Place is Raleigh photographer, and NCSU engineering professor, Russell Gorga’s ruminations on life in Raleigh and his overseas travels. Gorga’s work is that of an engineer- purposeful and literal- the images are constructed in a methodical nature, one that applies a feeling of posture to what is reality and part of his experience.

Tracy Spencer in Blink Block
Also at the Block Gallery is Blink Block an exciting show curated by the thoughtful Sarah Blackmon of Rebus Works. Blackmon worked with several local artists to collect camera phone pictures. Blink Block represents the opposite of Gorga’s strategic arrangements- of-the-moment images captured by today’s equivalent of the Polaroid- the camera phone. The artists include Paul Friedrich, Nicole Welch, Tracy Spencer, Phoebe Briley, Stephen Gardner, and Shonna Greenwell. Additional photographs invited through May 5 (by email, to blockgallery@gmail.com) for use in the exhibition and in slideshow during the lunchtime lecture, “Photo: Past, Present, Future” on Thursday, May 8 at noon.
hahahhahaaa….. Russell Gorga was my Textiles Materials Science lab professor. I didn’t get a chance to see his work on Friday, but I will try to soon!
