Kings Barcade Reopening on Martin Street This Summer

The past few weeks have been a fluster of chatter about Kings returning and we can finally put all the talk to rest. Kings will reopen this summer on Martin Street in the three story space that previously held Martin Street Music Hall, Alibi and Martin Street Pizza. The Music Hall has been closed for a few years, Alibi’s last night in operation was a few weeks ago and Martin Street Pizza closed last week.

The reincarnated Kings will consist of a bar downstairs in the former Alibi space, a restaurant on the street level and the music venue will be on the upper floor. Grayson Currin, over at the IndyWeek, reports that owners Ben Barwick, Steve Popson and Paul Siler - and a new partner, Cheetie Kumar, signed a 10-year lease on the property last Wednesday.

As Currin mentions, Kings spawned a large number of the bands that have gained more national recognition over the past few years since Kings closed including Megafaun, Birds of Avalon, Heads on Sticks, Bowerbirds and more. Raleigh’s music scene has suffered a bit since Kings, Bickett and even Martin Street Music Hall closed. A few places like Tir Na Nog, Slim’s, Lincoln Theatre, The Pour House and Berkeley Cafe have tried to fill the space left by their absence, but Raleigh hasn’t seemed to have as many nationally touring independent and hip-hop acts coming through the area. Most of them stick to the Chapel Hill and Carrboro area.

Kings reopening in a more central location in Downtown Raleigh, a half of a block off of Fayetteville Street, will be a great addition to downtown as a whole, not only the music scene. Each of the owners have been in the area and have taken their time to reopen the venue after it closed in April 2007, therefore a good amount of care will be put into insuring that the restaurant, bar and music venue will thrive. This also gives another downtown music venue for all of the festivals that will happen in the fall, Hopscotch, musicSPARK, and Cherry Bounce.

With the “Boutique Amphitheater” also opening this summer and the Progress Energy Center focusing a bit more on single musical and entertainment acts rather than off-Broadway shows, Raleigh’s music scene may see a resurgence in a way that will have a handful of other cities in the state and throughout the South looking our way.

Can we have Oak City Nights back on the first night please?

Read the full article over at the Indy and more to come from Currin on Wednesday.

I hate hearing this. Kings was always the armpit of Raleigh, balanced out with the other armpit, Slims. Now we are back to two places for hipsters to listen to sh*tty music and stink up this town.

    So much for progress..

That is fucking awesome.  Those guys have a proven record of success and while other venues have tried very hard to pick up the slack, it’s good to see some old pros back in the game.

You hate hearing this?  Downtown has been lacking a midsized venue since Kings closed down.  On top of it, for the amount of turnover in that building, it’s good to see it a business occupying it that isn’t going to close down in six months as we already know these guys know exactly what they are doing.

As far as the hipster aspect, Kings had waaay more that just ironic mustache hipster acts there.

Do you prefer empty storefronts or more art galleries in Downtown?

It was a joke. Don’t take it too seriously.

I confess I had never been to King’s in the past - and I am glad to have more activity in the downtown Raleigh area - but I hope that they will make an effort to be a good neighbor to those of us who work and live in the buildings right next to their new location on Martin Street.  It was very disheartening to have to walk through the many trash cans, broken beer bottles and cigarette butts that would be left on the sidewalk from the previous tenants’ evening business.  The City of Raleigh is trying to make downtown a great place to live, work and enjoy and the previous tenants were just trashy.  I hope that the new Kings can figure out somewhere else to keep their trash cans and make a plan to clear their debris from the sidewalk on a regular basis.

this is GREAT news!! Our local music scene wasn’t the only thing that was upset when King’s was bulldozed - a large, thriving, heterogeneous culture was diffused as well. I say bring it on,  I can’t wait to play there!

best news i’ve heard in a while ... i remember seeing Green Milk From The Planet Orange at Kings and it changed the way I looked at new rock music ... if it weren’t for Kings I would almost certainly never have heard of this Japanese group, let alone have ever had a chance to see them live.  They always booked great acts and it will be fantastic for downtown to have them back.  Congratulations to Steve, Paul, Ben and Cheetie for pulling this off.

This is great news! I hope they don’t fix up the “Alibi” space too much but do reduce some of the toilet overflow on the dance floor.  Don’t ever call it a dance floor, but have a goal of random contagious dancing with good music…not that reconstituted techno heard at every other failing douchebar in Raleigh.  Make sure the restaurant is open during the clubs business hours, especially after 2am!  Why else would you have a restaurant there?  Thanks and Best Wishes!

Excellent news!  It may not be the old Kings, but might end up being an improved, more “sustainable” location, given the 3-story complex (with basement bar + restaurant to help diversify the offerings), and very central location steps from Fayetteville St.

Kings reopening is a great thing, both for the local music scene and for downtown.  The proprietors of Kings knew their music and their audience well.

I do have to take issue with the statement that “A few places like Tir Na Nog, Slim’s, Lincoln Theatre, The Pour House and Berkeley Cafe have tried to fill the space left by their absence.”

The Pour House has been rockin’ LONG before Bickett or Martin Street Music Hall even existed.  I believe the Lincoln Theater predated both as well.  Plus each venue caters to a different music crowd than Kings did.

The Berkeley Cafe’s resurgence of bluegrass and americana acts fills the void left by the acts that played the short lived Hideaway BBQ, not Kings.

    Hey Kings…bring back DJ Madcow!

All I can say is that they better have Gluten-free draft beer and better not use spice in their food.  And I’ll never set foot in the place if they sell Pepsi. And how about a tech networking night with toddlers welcome?  And God forbid they allow some shitbird redneck band like Bandway to perform there.  I want folk music.

Bill, Gluten-free draft beer is not a trendy thing. People who eat gluten free, like me, do it for serious medical reasons. If I didn’t do it, I would open myself up to the likelyhood of getting cancer.

So, yes, I do hope they serve gluten free beer, and I’m not being ironic.

    Irony is so 90’s.

to all the douches that never saw kings before, shut the hell up. you have no idea how great it was to go to your local watering hole, any night of the week, and have a good time. whether it was trivia night, neu romance night, a gong show night, sharon jones may be playing on a wednesday…they made it work, and it was always fun to have a place to chill after work. don’t go if you are going to be an ass before you ever experience it. you suck and noone wants you there anyway. so continue to feel like a big person by posting negative stuff about kings. i for one had an amazing 7 years there, and am stoked they are willing to stick their necks out and bring it back. thanks steve, paul, cheetie and ben! more good times to come!

@joolietoo I know the people who run the joint and I am sure they’ll do their damnedest to keep thing tidy, that said there is now the new smoking laws in effect and don’t be a whiney, party pooper about some of us filthy smokers lollygagging about on the sidewalk. It’s going to happen. There and ever other bar and restaurant in town. The rock shall rise again, haters be damned and seriously I will take a fucking bat to the head of some high maintenance condo residing bimbo tsk-tsking the debris that comes along with a nightclub. I shall be handing out ear plugs and one way tickets out of town to whiny babies. But first I will projectile vomit cheap beer all over your designer shoes.

@hellyeah, your assumptions are completely wrong, as I am a hardworking denizen of downtown who simply does not like walking through broken glass and smelly leftover bar trash on my way to work the next morning, something which was never cleared up until the following evening, if then.  I dine and drink with friends at nearly every restaurant and bar within two blocks of Fayetteville street regularly and the ONLY one that was that trashy was Martin Street - maybe the other places have someone sweep or clear the debris at the end of the night.  I’m not trying to spoil anyone’s fun - I like to go out as much as anyone - but what’s wrong with being a little responsible at the end of the night?  Your own snotty and aggressive attitude is exactly the sort of person I would hope NOT to see…and which is what I am dreading.  I know one or two of the new owners and have high expectations of them, but if this is typical of their patrons…besides, the high-rise condo owners have indoor parking and don’t even NEED to walk on the street.  Try some mutual respect.

Excited about this! King’s in the past had a great history of booking good hardcore/punk shows and I hope they continue at the new location.
