Billed as "Part 3: The Reckoning" on its Facebook event page, the well loved Bickett Gallery Spelling Bee is set to make yet another comeback this Thursday, February 24th, at Kings. Hosted once again by the snarky Claire Hester, this time the bee will be co-hosted by Mark Connor. The pair is sure to have a stockpile of derisive quips prepared for the contestants, and perhaps a minimal amount of praise for spellers they deem worthy of being on stage.
Following the same format as previous rounds, the spelling bee, which originated in 2006, is an offshoot of the National Scripps Spelling Bee and the Williamsburg Spelling Bee. Contestants are awarded with a free beer for each word they spell correctly, and are inevitably mocked and taunted right off the stage when they make a spelling error. In addition to the free beer, which is award enough in and of itself in my book, there are prizes reserved for the winner and first and second runners up. The sponsors this time are Green Planet Catering, Moonlight Pizza, and Helios.
According to Hester, observers and participants alike can look forward to a great time. "While they always start off as well-intentioned, civilized battles of the wits, due to our liberal FREE-BEERS-FOR-GOOD-SPELLERS policy, they usually devolve into hilariously debauched (albeit semi-intelligent) wordfests." If you've not been to one of the bees in the past, don't miss your chance this time. There's a $5 charge to compete, and a $3 cover to watch. Registration runs from 9-9:30pm, and the action begins immediately thereafter. If you plan on registering, be sure to get there on time, as only a limited number of competitors are allowed to sign up.
