Following in the footsteps of the last photo giveaway is tough, but at least this one is a really great photo with some nice detail of old store fronts.
First person to comment whose funeral procession this was AND the correct year of the procession wins a mounted print of the photo.

You win, insaniti66! In 1893, a funeral procession for Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy during the Civil War, took place down Fayetteville Street. Davis actually died in New Orleans in 1889 but was reburied in Richmond Va. four years later. As part of the ceremonies that took place during the transfer of the body from LA to VA, his body lay in the Capitol for two hours.

Woooohoooo! Framed mural of a funeral procession going in the bedroom! The wife will love it!
Thanks Ladye Jane. Your items are the best. I cannot wait for the next one!
Anyone who guessed pre-1890’s should examine their vision. This picture is full of power lines.
Davis’ body was over 4 hours late that day. He is laying on a bear skin rug, and is being driving by a man who Davis once owned. There is a young girl on each corner holding a furled Confederate flag - I don’t have my paper right here, but they are all from big families in town - one is a Deavereux. When he got to the Capitol, there was a choir on the portico that sang funeral dirges as they carried the body in. The singers moved in with the body, continuing to sing. It was a big deal, not just in Raleigh, but in Montgomery & Atlanta where the body was taken to the state capitols as well. Richmond’s event was spectacular.
The N&O photo morgue has a two other view points of Davis coming down Fayetteville St, which they kindly let me make copies of years ago. I wish I had check in here earlier, I’d like to have this one!
