If you’re downtown frequently, chances are you’ve seen the sign, “KRAV MAGA RALEIGH” underneath AlterEgo on Hargett St. What could easily be confused as gibberish to those of us not in the know – Krav Maga is actually a fighting style that’s quickly making its way to the East Coast.

Originally started in the 1930s by Imi Lichtenfeld as a way to defend himself in the Jewish ghettos, Krav Maga became known for applying simple techniques that work with one’s natural instincts when defending yourself. In 1948 when Lichtenfeld became Chief Instructor of Physical Fitness for the State of Israel, Krav Maga was well on its way to becoming the official fighting style of the Israeli Defense Forces and widespread popularity.

The Raleigh studio formally opened in December of last year however the founder, Ken Richstad, has been teaching classes at the yoga studio next door, The Studio @ Hargett, for the past year. Leasing the current space from Greg Hatem and Empire Properties, Richstad transformed the basement of 119 E. Hargett St. into a studio filled with mats, huge rubber tires, punching bags and an assortment of other training supplies.

“Classes are intense and they are a workout,” commented Richstad, “but they’re all geared towards self defense. Some students come for fitness and leave learning how to fight, some come to learn how to fight and leave fit. You don’t have to be in great shape to come in and train – however many who come in do get stronger and fitter as a result.”

Ken described Krav Maga as a fighting style that’s quite popular on the West Coast (Krav Maga America was founded in LA) and is quickly making its way east. “There is a Krav Maga in the Charlotte/Gastonia area along with classes being taught in Fayetteville,” commented Richstad. “There are an additional 240 Krav Maga schools in North America.”

When talking with several students, most found out about Krav Maga while researching self defense styles. Everyone commented on how interesting and fun Krav Maga appeared to be.

Classes are fast-paced and aerobic while drilling basic techniques that can be used in a variety of situations. “We teach students to apply principles that work with their natural instincts – one solution to multiple scenarios,” continued Richstad.

So next time you’re headed down Hargett St. and you see people flipping huge tires, striking things with sledgehammers or anything else random, don’t panic.
