Krispy Kreme coming to Fayetteville Street

No we don’t get the Krispy Kreme newsletter.  The lure of the fried dough candy would just be too much to resist and too much for our aerteries.  But we know how Carolinians and Raleigh folk like their donuts. Local, and all the time.  At the bottom of their last email Krispy Kreme attached a p.s.:

P.S. We’re opening a second Neighborhood Shop & Kremery on Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh in October!

So in October as we wander away from the bars with a drunken hunger, it will be all we can do not to stuff ourselves with Hot Now donuts… lets hope they are open that late.

For a company that was expected to go belly up this year, this have to be a good sign.

Hopefully they will fare better than Dunkin Donut’s.

You mean the dunkin donuts on glenwood south?  I don’t see the comparison?

The problem with the Glenwood Dunkin’ Donuts was the lack of a drive-thru.  What Dunkin’ Donuts has done to set themselves apart from the competition, beyond the quality of their food and coffee, is that they’re the “working man’s” coffee shop, not some fru-fru, flitter-your-life-away coffee shop like Starbucks.  For all intents and purposes, the Glenwood DD styled itself as a “hang-out” coffee shop.

As much as I love the idea of urban Dunkin’ Donuts like on every street corner in Boston, there just isn’t the addicted concentrated mass here as there is in bigger cities.  Dunkin’ Donuts have been thriving in the triangle and have pulled in quite a few converts, but they really need a drive-thru to succeed in this area and pull in the folks on their way too and from work.

Orange Raleigh is right. Maybe us addicted-types need to organize?

OrangeRaleigh - the DD on Hillsborough St seems to be going strong with no drive-thru.

Ashton is correct, according to Wednesday’s News and Observer.

The DD on Hillsborough Street thrives quite well without a drive-thru, but also receives a huge fan base from the giant college next door.

I love that DD, they know me so well there.  Been going there off/on for about 4 years now weekly.  :D

I agree for glazed, but DD has more variety.  You can’t argue that.  raspberry

DD will never be able to beat a nice hot KK doughnut.  Mmmmm…

I think DD flopped because it was next door to Bruegger’s Bagels.  Every time I would go to that location, I’d tell myself that I was going to try DD instead of a bagel.  But, I never did and neither did most other people.

Shame DD flopped there.  But to be honest they had a better bagel.  Breugger’s Bagels are garbage…only bagel worth a damn in the area is New York Bagel Deli in Cary in the Harris Teeter/Wal-Mart shopping center.  I know it isnt downtown but a good/real bagel is worth the drive.

bcb—damn straight.  NYBD in Cary is absolutely amazing and worth the drive, but be prepared to wait in line for 15+ minutes on a weekend morning.  Their bagels also don’t keep for more than 2 days or so, if you are looking to stock up.

DD > KK, coffee is superior as well as better donuts (KK yes does have great, fresh glazed donuts, but the rest suck). When are we going to stop opening food-related places downtown and open some retail? Unless you’re a drinker or somebody that eats out all the time, you have very little to do downtown, no wonder condos arent selling and people leave at 5 o’clock.
