Listen: Freedom Ritual

Dark Meat rolled into Raleigh in their big green bus.  As you see from these photos, they’ve modified the bus so that they are able to live in it.

According to legend, the bus was used in the movie “We Are Marshall”.  It almost seems appropriate since the sound of Dark Meat could easily be compared with a “thundering herd”, although its more like thundering heard. I’ve seen Dark Meat in different venues in different states (yes, the geographical kind) and while their sound wasn’t properly captured, their volume more than made up for it.  I had to move to the back to save my hearing.  Going to shows without earplugs is a bad move (especially if you are trying to wake up at 7:30am).  My kudos to all the future tinnitus sufferers (like Chad, Mark, Caroline, Brooks, Matt, etc.) who stayed at the front for the whole set.  You guys are all right.

Dark Meat mainly stuck to material from their Vice-reissued debut, Universal Indians, which has now been expanded to include a live tribute to Albert Ayler and two live performances from The Joshua Tree National Park.  The Double LP format is pretty rad, and also comes with a download code for some high-quality audio for the convenience.

The audience seemed a tad disillusioned when Dark Meat closed with their debut album’s closer, “There is a Retard on Acid Holding a Hammer to Your Brain.”  Maybe the tinnitus set in early.

Dark Meat will be on tour from now until the end of May.  Their tour with Monotonix, however, will end on Sunday, April 20th in New York at the Cake Shop.  Tell your friends in other towns to be on the look out!

If you missed the show, here’s a sample.
