The night started with a DJ set from the DJ Midnite Cowboy, who mainly stuck to garage rock flavored singles from his (I have no doubt) amazing collection. He threw in a little funk for variation, but no one at Slim’s seemed to mind. Everybody seem to be enjoying it.
Pinche Gringo was first to play. This one man band, from Mexico City, used to live in Raleigh. He moved to Mexico City a while back. He had members of Grass Widow and others joining him on stage. The crowd came up to the front just to see what he was up to. The encouragement of audience participation added a unique element to the show-going experience. His style of music is akin to garage-rock with a little bit of raw blues. It was amazing to see him play drums, guitar and sing. His cover of Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away” was good, but his rendition of Shocking Blue’s “Send Me A Postcard” with a woman who joined him on stage left a little to be desired.

After another set from Midnite Cowboy, Grass Widow was ready to bombast their audience with the mesh of early 80’s British punk and the 60’s guitar jangle of California. They started the night off slow, but got things going real quick. Bassist Mike Dillon told the audience that they have a record coming out. From the information provided, its going to be a 10”, 4-song EP. They’re still waiting on some guy in New Jersey to mix it. I can’t wait to hear it myself.
