Almost two years after burning down, The Latta House (and the foundation that shares its name) has received funding for an archaeological dig of the property as well as money for a future memorial park.
The city has approved a request of $15,000 for the dig and will also set aside $50,000 for the future park. It is good to know that the hard work of the neighborhood and volunteers has been heard and respected. Preserving history in our city is important, even (historical) modern structures.
The Latta House Foundation is always looking for volunteers so contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) if there is anything you think you can do to help.

This is good news! As a resident of Oberlin Village, I could not be more pleased that the city is *doing something* to recognize (and appropriately document) this historic property. The story of Reverend Latta and Latta University is largely unknown by Raleigh residents (even those who live in Oberlin/Cameron Villages), which I find very sad. But these steps by the city offer promise. While a park falls short of the cultural center that the Latta House Organization has been advocating for, let’s hope that there are educational materials for park visitors in keeping with Latta’s vision and that a spirit of community can thrive under the oak trees.
