So a few years ago, back in say July of 2007, Tir Na Nog (under the guidance of Chris Tamplin) filled a live music gap left from the closing of both Bickett Gallery and Kings Barcade. Tamplin and TIr Na Nog started a Local Band Local Beer night that featured (as the name suggests), local bands and local beers. They started with highlighting one (of the few) local beers and a couple of bands each Thursday night. Later, as more brewers started popping up in the area, they would come in and offer free samples of their beers. WKNC was the main sponsor helping spotlight new local bands. Over the years, the event became a huge rejuvenation for both the local music and craft beer scene.
Fast forward almost four years. Chris Tamplin has left to open Motorco in Durham, but the bands continue on and the local beer part has moved back to Thursday night local beer specials. Things have changed indeed but starting next week, Tir Na Nog is going to get back to the roots of the beer highlighting aspect of the weekly event by inviting in a local brewery to take over the back cottage of the space and offer tastings of their beers and other specials. The Brewer's Series will happen on the second Thursday of each month and will feature, per the normal Local Band Local Beer night, a few bands from the area and a particular brewery. As well, the events will feature other local companies doing great things (from retail to desserts) in the area.
New Raleigh will be sponsoring the first two of these Brewer's Series on Thursday February 10th and Thursday March 10th. February will feature Fullsteam Brewery out of Durham and bands Gray Young (Raleigh), Fan Modine (Carrboro) and The Big Picture (Durham). Fullsteam will start sampling their beers, including the new release First Frost featuring NC persimmons, at 7pm with bands going on at 10pm. South Durham Confection Company will be there will a selection of beer biscuits to sample that complement First Frost. A full triangle affair. There will also be drawings for door prizes.
We will be providing more information soon about the March Brewer's Series soon and hope to see you out on Thursday.

Tir Na Nog Local Band Local Beer
I’d go if anybody was serving beer BUT Fullsteam. I love my local businesses, but they have to provide good products. I’ve never had a Fullsteam beer that was good, and unfortunately, I’ve never met anybody who likes Fullsteam beer, either. They need to fire their brewmaster and find somebody competent. They have a great spot, and a great, eager customer base. Now they just need a good product.
It’s great how any idiot with a beer in their hand thinks they are qualified to tell breweries how to do their business. What’s even better though, is most breweries are smart enough to ignore that idiot and keep brewing their beer for the people that do buy and enjoy it.
Keep up the good work Fullsteam.
Thanks, tc -
Well, as the owner of Fullsteam (and mighty proud of our beer), I’m still new at the game of whether to ignore anonymous criticism or engage it. It’s confusing to me: we have restaurants selling a lot of our beer, more bars and restaurants asking to carry us than we can currently handle, a lively bar, and patrons that seemingly love our product. We’re particularly proud of First Frost, our new 9% winter persimmon ale that we’ll be premiering at Tir nA nOg.
So I shall engage the criticism, if Joe is game.
Joe: what beers did you have, and when? And what was wrong with them? Here’s a list of our beers if it helps:

I am sincere in my interest. I would love to know specifically what you didn’t like. If you would prefer to write me privately, I’m at sean (at) fullsteam (dot) ag.
I’d be more than happy to host a tasting for you and your friends (whom you said also don’t like our beer)...not to try and win you over (though that’d be nice), but to truly understand what you don’t like about our beer, and what you’d recommend we’d change.
Thank you! I look forward to your reply. And I’m looking forward to the Tir nA nOg event this Thursday! Many thanks to Pete and his team for asking us to kick off this new series.
Cheers,
Sean Lilly Wilson

Alas, Joe inspired me.

Fullsteam = NC goodness
Any time Sean. I really like your beer, and appreciate your creative approaches. I look forward to trying First Frost.
If you want to host a tasting for me and my friends, we’d be more than game.
tc - sure, I’m game. You made a crappy day better. Email me and we’ll set something up.
Joe, the offer still stands. Haven’t heard from you yet.
I have had 4 or 5 different Fullsteam beers and I think they all stand out in both taste and uniqueness. I also enjoyed your brewery when we visited. I only wish the beer was easier to find here in Raleigh. Anyway, good job and keep it up.
