Mario Marzan will be speaking about his work at 4pm this Saturday at Rebus Works. Marzan’s images and sculptures have been on display at Rebus Works for the past six weeks and they offer a commentary on space and architecture familiar with what we have seen on display in Raleigh this fall. Marzan grew up in the Puerto Rican Mountains and this origin permeates the elements of each piece. The images depict abstracted structures with visual elements hinting at energy flow and interaction. The sculpture presented is reminiscent of a mashup of fantasy doll houses and architectural models. One of the more intriguing aspects is the integration of small LCD screens into the structures that display various video content.
Marzan is cogent and aware of his influences as explained in this excerpt from his artist statement:
Each drawing is a recollection, broken down into symbols and arranged into layers of repeated imagery. In the process of drawing, fragments emerge as recurring forms I refer to as “characters”. Operating in a space between the real and the imagined, these characters cross over the boundaries of reality into fiction. I am inspired by the cycles of deconstruction and reconstruction that the island’s hurricanes produce. Just like the natural destructive energy that shaped vernacular architecture of my childhood, the hurricane also informs invention of alternative reality in my work today.
