Martin Street Pizza

Raleigh has great independent pizza: Lily’s, Amore’s, Moonlight, Vic’s, and Capital Creations. Still, downtown has had a serious gap in places to quickly grab a quality slice, until now. Martin Street Pizza opened its doors this week, and after an initial visit, I am confident this pizzeria is here to stay.

The seasonal menu has a lot to offer other than pizza, with an emphasis on well-crafted original sandwiches and the intent to feature more traditional Italian dishes in the near future.  Cheeses and oils are imported from Italy while most of the meat and vegetables come from local sources. I tried a slice of pizza topped with incredible Italian sausage links made in-house that morning. A second slice had perfectly caramelized onions and roasted peppers. The pizza was flavorful and filling, but absolutely not too heavy or overdone. My friend ordered the Martin Street, a bun piled high with roast pork, petite fries, and slaw served with a side of house-made chips and a delicious homemade pickle. The large portion size and quality made the sandwich a steal at $7. Despite being the pizzeria’s first lunch service, the food quality was top notch and quick.

While the space was nothing to brag about, it was comfortable and pleasant. Tables are neatly covered in cloths. Unlike some other new restaurants downtown, Martin Street Pizza makes the effort to use washable napkins, silverware, and plates because honestly, drought or not, styrofoam is inexcusable. Two flat screens hang behind the metallic bar and a projector will soon be installed to air the occasional sports event, but more often than not, classic movies. An awning will be in place by the end June, offering much needed outdoor dining downtown.

By the end of June a full liquor bar should be in place alongside draft beers: Big Boss, a couple of undetermined microbrews, Guinness, Yeungling, and PBR. Expect to see rotating specialty drinks using fresh squeezed juices once the liquor bar is in place.

For now the hours are 11am-10pm, but should be extended to 2am by late July. Currently the restaurant is closed Sundays, but expect that to change too. Martin Street Pizza is located at 14 W. Martin St. on the street level above Alibi and below the former Downtown Event Center, which rumor has will be a new bar called the Five & Dime, but thats another post all together.

I can’t wait to give Martin St Pizza a try! From the photos, I am impressed. I was thinking more along the lines of your standard grungy pizza-by-the-slice joint, but Martin St seems to go beyond that. What a nice addition to downtown!

  • Jedidiah06/25 08:43 AM

Went yesterday and the pizza and fries were great.

They also have six beer taps, PBR and Guinness so far...four more to come soon.

Also, their tea is labeled “The Sweetness” and “Not Sweetness"…

  • kg06/25 09:11 AM

Thank God.  Pizza by the slice.

  • lunarvision06/25 12:26 PM

Ahhhhh, now this is some good news!

Looking forward to late night eats; although open till 3am would be nice, and an alternative to the hectic NCSU Pizzamerica.

  • Diane06/25 01:25 PM

Wow, is it actually open on Saturdays? Awesome.

  • Leo06/25 04:48 PM

Woohoo! Checkin them out tonight. I’ve been really eager for them to open.

  • RaleighRob06/26 07:58 AM

Correct me if I’m wrong, but that menu looks like they only offer six toppings??  I don’t think I’ve ever seen a pizza place offer so few.

  • OCOG06/26 10:49 AM

Looks like a great place! I’m a little disappointed that Sylvia’s wasn’t mentioned in the independent pizza joint list though...excellent pizza when you catch them actually open

  • Tim06/26 10:54 AM

Raleigh Rob, other ingredients are listed on the specialty pies. I would expect to see toppings expand by the slice though.

OCOG, Sylvia’s is worth a mention. You and anyone else can review and rate Sylvia’s on our restaurant guide.

We are excited to walk over and check the place out! A group of us are headed there Friday night with high hopes of a new Raleigh staple.  Will let you know the initial review…

  • Zach06/26 03:31 PM

Went for lunch on Tuesday… very very good pizza! I ordered the special (2 slices and a drink) with sausage and peppers. The pizza came out with fresh sausage, roasted red peppers, parmesan and spices.  What a treat! These guys take pride in their food and it shows!

  • ChiefJoJo06/30 09:13 AM

I live DT, so having another spot within walking distance in the core (that’s not sushi) is a welcome addition. I was there for dinner on Sat. The service was friendly, the house salad was better than average, although I would have loved to have more than tomatoes and greens.  They serve pizza by the slice, and you can tell the ingredients are homemade.  One more note: they should have their liquor license as of today, so drink up!

  • mb621007/01 08:20 PM

Delicious homemade ingredients. We tried 4 different slices, all were tasty but the best was the Italian sausage with carmelized onions. Nice, big NY style slices so 2 was more than enough- I have leftovers for lunch.
No liquor license tonight, but they were hopeful to have it by tomorrow (7/2). The pizza would have been perfectly complimented by a beer or glass of wine.
Service was attentive and friendly.  A welcome addition to downtown Raleigh for sure!

  • georgia07/02 01:27 PM

Is PBR having a comeback? We were raised on the stuff in Georgia, but it was never advertised as special. Had a good price and a good taste. Was perfect for floats down the Chattahoochee river.

  • Brittany07/03 09:15 AM

Any word on the liquor license? Did they get it this week?

  • joey07/03 04:10 PM

I heard they got the license and come monday should be ready to go!!!! cant wait until they are open for late night...the place is awesome the food is great and i am hoping the drink specials will be the same....see you guys there!!!

  • wg07/08 12:21 PM

anyone know for sure if they have alcohol now, or not?

  • joey07/09 11:18 PM

They got booze!!! I was in for a beer tonight!!! Once they get those t.v’s working should be a nice place to hangout and relax....Anyone heard about outside seating? I though I heard a rumor that they will have something? Is this true?

  • wg07/10 07:57 AM

yeh, they are supposed to have outdoor seating at the beginning of next month i think.  that will be cool....

  • corey3rd07/18 01:47 PM

my only reason to eat downtown. The Parma is a thrill to show off to guests.

  • rnb07/21 09:13 PM

if you haven’t been to martin street pizza lately, i would hold off. apparently they have already undergone a complete turnover in their kitchen staff, including the chef. i was there today and it was TERRIBLE. after an extremely long line to order and a longer wait at the table, there was WARM lettuce in my salad, gross soggy crutons (supposedly polenta filled, but they still shouldn’t be soggy), and burnt pizza. when my entire table complained, the manager came out (it took 15-20 minutes) and merely offered us a lunch on him next time. we hadn’t and couldn’t eat our current lunch, but he didn’t seem to care… he actually said he “wished he could get us new slices, but they were too backed up.” really?

it is sad because this place started out really great… but it isn’t looking good. or tasting good. where did the original chef + kitchen staff go? i’ll try lunch THERE…

  • kd07/22 12:01 PM

yes, sad to say you may want to hold off on Martin St. bummer. we went for lunch last week and there were delightful surprises...a homemade sausage for the slices and the blue cheese salad dressing was 4 star quality. well, we went back yesterday and sad to say, the sausage was sliced, not homemade and the blue cheese dressing was straight from a jar. come to find out the talent in the kitchen, Daniel Taylor, and the owner had a conflict on the direction of the offerings. Tragic...as the owner could have had a huge success on his hands. In driving out a talented chef he now has a plain jane pizza shack on his hands. we won’t be back, but we will be keeping our eyes open to see where Daniel Taylor goes next.

  • corey3rd07/22 12:12 PM

this is just disgusting news. Finally a great place to eat downtown that isn’t going to cost a fortune.

How can the owner argue about the direction? There was more than enough potential in that place. I’m happy about going there many times during its short life and dragging friends.

  • Al07/22 02:20 PM

We went there when it first opened and the salad was served warm with polenta croutons. I don’t see how it can suddenly be in the running to be considered a “shack” because the chef left. Give me a break. One bad review and suddenly everything is falling apart? Sounds like some disgruntled employees are talking.

  • corey3rd07/22 02:32 PM

It’s not that it’s a bad review or disgrunted employees. I can understand if you’re used to eating at Pizza Hut that you can’t see a difference between one pie that comes out of the oven in Raleigh and another in Durham. Cause there isn’t. It all comes out of cans, boxes and freezer bags.

The Martin Street Pizza that people gushed about enjoying is gone. The recipes are gone. The chef and his staff are gone. When you order the pickles, they won’t be fresh cukes and okra from the farmer’s market that have been pickled. The chips will be coming out of a bag and not deep fried in the back. The sausage won’t be made in the back. Already they’ve gone from the red onions to sliced up white ones. Onions is onions!

You want a break. go ahead and take one. I wanted my Parma pizza.

  • Joolie07/23 03:17 PM

I was planning to order pizzas for a meeting I am hosting tonight - but when I found out the sad direction of the Martin Street Pizza, decided to get in my car and drive to another favorite pizza place, even though Martin Street is just next door to my office.  Daniel had a great vision and it is very disappointing to see things turn for the worse, and so quickly.

  • Steve07/23 04:24 PM

I was in for dinner last night with friends and have now eaten at the restaurant three times over approximately a 2 week span.  My first experience was incredible, and I thought the pizza was fantastic.  The crust was firm and chewy, the sauce was spicy and tasty, and overall it was just wonderful.  I told many of my friends about it and I highly recommended the restaurant to them.

The next two times I ate there the pizza was not nearly not as good, and frankly, it was pretty mediocre.  The crust was not as nice and the sauce wasn’t as good either.  The cheese seemed different too, and not as good.  Also, while the greek salad was incredible the first time, it too changed for the worse (the fired feta was gone, and it really made the salad, along with the fresh pita bread strips) and the price went up.  I must say I thought the salad was underpriced the first time because it was so good and such a nice size.  I would gladly pay more for the first really good salad.  With respect to the pizza, I thought $2.25 was a pretty low price for the pizza, and I would have paid more because it was so good.  The price has now gone down on the slices, but I would gladly pay more to have pizza of the same quality as the first time I had it.  I can pay $2.00 a slice for average pizza anywhere.

I have heard that there has been some sort of conflict between the Chef and the owner.  These things happen, and it is unfortunate.  But regardless of whatever is going on behind closed doors, the change at Martin St. Pizza in the food has not been a good change.  As things stand now, I would not recommend the restaurant to anyone I know, which is really unfortunate.

I would really like to see the restaurant succeed; it is in a great location, has a great space, and is a wonderful addition to the downtown restaurant scene.  But I am really disappointed to have the food quality take such a bad turn so quickly.  I was tremendously excited after that first visit.  Now … not so much.  You are screwing up a good thing.  Please fix it.

  • Don Bender08/01 05:52 AM

Apparently disgruntled, ineffective employees like to make reviews or have their friends to do so.  Statistically, Martin Street Pizza is getting good feedback from their customers who repeatedly eat there each week.  The food is better than ever and that is attested to by the patrons, not some “boneheads” who aspire to be what they will never be.

Come by, the food is still excellent and will get better and have more variety in the near future.  By the way, Mayor Meeker, and his family, enjoyed a nice evening at Martin Street this weekend.

As for the “fame” of the UNDERGROUND, why is it still not there?

  • Mike Lum08/01 07:07 AM

    Don,

Screw off. I don’t know exactly what you did, but you ruined a place that I enjoyed making an effort to eat at. Raleigh has way too many pizza places for me to want to travel all the way downtown, fight for parking for the sake of eating a slice of pizza using all the wonderful stuff that comes pre-made off the back of a truck.

Far as your snide attack on the Underground, Why must you insult a place that I enjoyed eating? Is that a polite Southern thing to do? You are a mean and bitter man and have just sealed your fate to being off my choices for dining.

As I said before, I don’t need to travel for your kind of pizza, they come to me when I call.

  • Shannon08/07 11:40 AM

I agree, screw you Don. Thanks for ruining my dinner the other night by staying at our table and running your mouth for 20+ minutes when we clearly just wanted you to leave so we could eat. Neither I nor anybody else cares about your past sports career.
Did you think people wouldn’t notice the extreme drop off in food quality? Fresh, quality ingredients are not the same as the cheap crap.
Grow up and stop being a baby, why is it so hard for you to handle a negative review? Maybe you should find out who wrote them and hold them down and put a blow torch near their face. Oh wait, you already did that to a former employee.
I would have happily patronized MSP again but I just don’t need any more of your crazy.

  • rob08/14 12:24 PM

    Hi Don,

You have zero class, but that really comes as no surprise to anyone who knows you.  Your food is average at best, at least it it was my LAST time there.  BTW, I guess you aspire to be the joke of raleigh.  Congrats, you succeeded.

Oh yeah, crazy doesnt go well with pizza…
