Holly Aiken’s large hanging bag at Stitch on the corner of Hargett and Wilmington Streets is one of the best retail signs in town. Unfortunately, it looks to have been stolen sometime late Tuesday night or early on Wednesday morning. Not really sure why someone would steal this unless they were completely drunk and thought it was “funny”.
I wonder if a ransom note will show up? If so, it better be stitched or crocheted into a piece of fabric. If you know anything on its whereabouts, shoot us an .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) at editors@newraleigh.com and we will relay the information to Holly. There is a reward if found.

Seriously, who didn’t see that coming?
Bunch of savages in this town.
Was bound to happen. Should take it down after hours.
Probably the same bastard that stole a bunch of stuff from father and son down the street. Among other things they stole two pink members only jackets.
I hope they bag the scoundrels.
Yeah, I am actually surprised it wasn’t stolen earlier. Not that it’s good that it was stolen, but seems like a no brainer that it would be, esp so close to all the bars.
That’s HUGE bag! Damn!
Oh NO!!!!! I love Holly’s bags! Come on Raleigh! Quit being so douchy!
What’s interesting about New Raleigh is that they’re up in arms over this theft, but then idolize the Barrel Monster. Seems like everyone thought that theft was “funny”.
But yes, this is a shame and it’s disappointing. I hope Stitch gets their sign back.
1 major difference 150. The construction company didn’t care. Holly does.
I would not have a piece of my property hanging unsecured 8 feet off the ground on a very busy corner if I might be upset if it went missing. It is unbelievable to me that it has been there as long as it has.
“Among other things they stole two pink members only jackets. ”
Can you really “steal” something that belongs in an incinerator?
@150: Apparently you don’t have a sense of humor. Even the construction company got a kick out of it and supported the artist in the end.
check if it was confiscated by the city of raleigh…it doesn’t look like it meets the sign ordinance they adopted by the nazis in cary.
I doubt that it was someone being funny. I would point my blame at one of the many homeless people wandering around the Moore Square bus station that is right across the street.
Wake up people
@Steve: Nobody said it was someone being funny.
But that bag is well up there…
‘It is a melancholy truth that even great men have their poor relations.’
Why would anyone nick a bag that more than likely unsellable in Raleigh.
Somebody (tall) is having a laugh. Sadly, at Ms. Holly’s expense.
@gd: I knew someone would say that. Stealing is stealing, isn’t it? Stealing from the construction company was ok because (after the fact) they laughed and said they didn’t care? Would we celebrate the Barrel Monster had the construction company gotten upset? Interesting values. Let’s be careful what we support and what message we’re sending.
@Steve: I know it doesn’t look like it, but I do have a sense of humor. I just don’t think it’s funny when someone negatively affects someone else just for their own amusement. I prefer not to support and encourage (as NR does) those actions. Had the BM been made from materials the “artist” bought, I’d have gotten a laugh out of it.
Man do I sound old! I’m off to put more moth balls in my closet.
It is a shame that someone took the bag, but it was bound to happen. Why not just take it down at the close of business?
yes stealing is stealing, but if you steal something from me that I don’t care about, I won’t care and don’t expect others to care either…
@Micah: From what I recall, it was actually secured. Just by a few cables, but secured nonetheless.
The problem there gd, is that Carnavale stole something before knowing if the construction company cared. That act isn’t later justified because the construction company was cool with it. Carnavale stole barrels. Some jerk stole this purse. There’s no difference in the acts just because one victim got mad and one didn’t. What happens if a Purse Monster shows up tomorrow?? Will everyone laugh and call it creative? Or will people be outraged because Holly Aiken is upset? Hopefully Jedidiah and others consider that. I suspect NR didn’t think it through, as supporting one and getting upset at the other is a bit conflicting.
Hopefully that at least makes sense, even if people don’t agree.
I just want to address all those, “Duh, it was bound to happen” comments, obviously Holly has faith in the human race to be mostly trust worthy. As a former business owner, who has been stolen from, I still have faith that people are good and mostly trust worthy. Hopefully, the bag will show up back at it’s rightful home above the door.
