Morgan Street Now Open to Two-Way Traffic

Morgan Street, from St. Mary’s to Hillsborough Street, opened to two-way traffic over the weekend. Previously, Morgan Street (which becomes Hillsborough on the West side of downtown and New Bern on the East side) changed from one-way to two-way at St. Mary’s and back to one way at Dawson. Now the street will be two-way from the new roundabout at the intersection of Hillsborough to Dawson Street (in front of the Borough) where it turns to one-way eastbound. This particular roundabout and change met a lot of public criticism a few years back.

This project is a continuation of the Hillsborough Street Renaissance that is adding three new roundabouts, a new median and more to the college strip. Maybe this will bring more visitors to a handful of the businesses located in this section of Morgan Street including Irregardless Cafe, Atomic Salon, Charlie Goodnights and Burger Hut! I’m sure a few of the businesses could use the extra traffic.

Morgan Street from Dawson Street to St. Mary’s Street will continue to operate as a two-way street. However, westbound Morgan Street between Dawson Street and St. Mary’s Street will be reduced to one through lane due to the addition of parking along Morgan Street between Dawson Street and Glenwood Avenue.

It has only been a day and has completely changed my life.  Connectivity to West Morgan at last!!!!

Now if we could just convince the City to build the connector from Western Blvd to Morgan near Goodnights as shown on Comp Plan we’d be in business!

Totally.  That may be something they’ll think more about when all the new construction starts.

The new roundabout at the West Morgan / Hillsborough split has made crossing that intersection on foot SO much easier.  It used to be almost uncrossable.  Now it’s a piece of cake, and much, much safer.

I love driving down west morgan and having drivers flash their lights at me.  I just wave at them. smile

This is good.  Way too many people failed to realize that the one-way began at St. Mary’s and kept driving down Morgan.  That bend near Goodnight’s was asking for a head on accident.  You’d never see the wrong way driver until they were through your windshield.

I like it.  But when they add light rail and a bike lane, it will need to switch back to one way.

Ditto Betsy’s comments.  I frequently walk through the Hillsborough/Morgan intersection, and it used to be a racetrack with no apparent safe way to cross on foot… so much safer now.  Also agree with JT that a connector to Western makes sense for the sake of connectivity between Boylan and Ashe Avenues across the tracks.  It seems that excessive cost and traffic fears have nixed that idea for now.

Now if people could only learn how to use round abouts.

I haven’t noticed any problems with people using the roundabouts.  Have you?

No problems at the roundabouts?  Hardly!  I go through them 8-10 times per week, and at least once each week there is someone who either blatantly pulls out in front of me while I am in the roundabout, or someone that stops in front of me at the entrance and just waits and waits until there are NO cars in the roundabout then they will proceed.  I have heard some say that there is a “learning curve” for roundabouts, but I don’t think this is really true.  I do think that they will get better when they are completely finished and striped and all the construction barrels and such are gone.  I also THINK I believe they are better than lights.  I just wonder with most drivers if maybe lights are better though…It takes all the decision away.  Red=Stop, Gree=Go.  With a roundabout you yield, which means you have to make your OWN decision about whether to proceed or not.  I wouldn’t trust some of my best friends and relatives with this decision.

There’s one rule for roundabouts (via the Brits and Dutch who have perfected the use of them):

If you’re in it, keep going. If you’re not, yield.

    Simple as that.

I agree, Jed.  But, if I had not slammed on my brakes and steered into a traffic barrel towards the center of the roundabout last Friday I would have run directly into the side of another car that didn’t yield.  I wasn’t going fast either, since I have learned my lesson the past couple of weeks.  This wasn’t the first time.  Pedestrians crossing in front of you from your right to your left are also a problem, because if you are yielding to traffic from the left, you generally aren’t looking right.  I think this problem will be solved once they are finished and the crosswalks are in the proper places though.
