And the spring and summer outdoor concerts begin….
Indie Folk Rockers My Morning Jacket will play Cary’s Koka Booth Amphitheatre on April 30th and will be supported by the historic Preservation Hall Jazz Band from New Orleans. On the outdoor stage in the woods, this should be a beautiful evening of indie-jazz-folk music.
Update: Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Friday February 5th at 12pm for $35 here.
Pre-Sale starts Wed. Feb. 3rd @ 10 am and lasts until Thursday February 4th @ 10pm. You can get those tickets here and use the password amazed.

Dear Koka Booth Amphitheater:
Please TURN IT THE FUCK UP!
I was 6 rows back from Wilco, and in the lawn for Avetts and Kings of Leon, and not one second of any of those experiences is what you’d call proper concert volume.
Yea i agree on the volume. Cary kids. They’ll never turn it up there in Cary.
I wonder if the lower volume is because of nearby residents? I know that the Boylan Heights Association is already worried about how the music at the outdoor venue planned in Raleigh is going to affect residents there.
sux when u pay over inflated ticket prices to see a band perform at half their performance volume.koko should inform the public that they will not hear artist play at their regular volume. i 2nd Matt A.kings of leon performance was totally weak due to this, not to mention the mtv frat rat audience…i used like that band…rats!
Totally agree with Matt..boyfriend and I were at KoKa to see Kings of Leon and Elvis Costello. Both played way under normal concert volume! Don’t have much hope things will change. I wonder if the ladies of Cary have to stifle their moans/screams??
Yeah, Koka Booth has always sucked. The volume is due to the ‘lameness’ of Cary and the surrounding neighborhoods filled with spoiled children and ignorant mothers.
Let’s do something about it then. Contact the Koka Booth GM, Production manager, anyone who will listen and maybe we can get to the bottom of this ordinance? It is an actual legal agreement with Town of Cary? Can it be put to vote? Who in the city can influence these ordinances, existing or not?

My guess is that MMJ will play this venue this one time only, realize they can’t play the volume, they want and find a new venue. I’ve watched them go from Cat’s Cradle with only about 20 of us in attendance to a sell-out show the next time they were there, and now to much bigger venues. They’ll be in stadiums before you know it.
If you haven’t ever seen these guys, I would get my ass there if i was you. Regardless of volume they are one of the best live acts you can catch these days.
Prepare to have your face melted.
Update: Got a nice note back from GM, Becky. “We do have regulations at Koka Booth but will work hard to make sure your concert experience is not compromised. ” Atleast my voice was heard… if anyone else wants to participate and voice their excitement for the show along with concerns on volume… use .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
Email sent….you’d think if enough people complained they’d have to do something…
great idea…email sent. Hope it makes a difference!
Update 2: Got a note back from MMJ manager as well. They assured me they are hyper sensitive as well about venue sound and volume. They did a full on exhaustive analysis on this issue and Booth does allow bands to turn it up louder by 5dbs on the weekends. Also, MMJ is looking at adding additional speakers at the back of the ampitheatre as well. Personally, my concerns have been addressed. I am actually surprised at how quickly and kindly both Koka Booth and MMJ management got back to me. I’m more excited than ever now for the show.
Greta job Dave. Does anyone know if there is a pre-sale?
I think the only solution is to book My Bloody Valentine there and let the chips fall where they may. ![]()
5 db is only slightly above a noticeable volume increase (that threshold is 3 db). This will still NOT be how MMJ should ever be heard.
I hope the amphitheater downtown will have a higher threshold so we can steal all those Cary shows. With that regulation Cary doesn’t deserve a venue as nice as Koka.
Let Juicifer play there and Cary will implode.
Koka Booth to host SUNN O))), Town of Cary to be melted by sound waves.
Hey guys…I’ve updated the post to include ticket information.
Got my pit tickets with the amazed password. ‘wordless’ is another i’ve heard works.
Yeah, Koka Booth’s volume sucks. I second Denise’s opinion, in fact she was my date! I love that girl. Anyway, back in the summer I complained to the mgt at KB and they pretty much told me to stuff it. 5db isn’t going to matter. I think the word needs to go out to the music press, promoters etc. what a lousy venue this is for rock n roll. Let KB try to make it on wine, cheese and symphony shows.
GO!Studios in Carborro didn’t seem to mind how loudly MMJ played when I say them open for Ben Kweller several years ago.
As predicted, the volume at last night’s show was a serious problem. Koka Booth should never host another rock concert until or if this can be resolved.
Volume was great down in the pit last night. The band was on fire and they were loving it. Jim was pretty pleased with the venue. If you have a problem with the volume, don’t buy lawn tickets. Pretty simple. Besides, the lawn is for old people and rookies. If you wanna rock, get off your ass.
The volume was NOT great down in the pit last night. The only decent spot was the back of the pit directly in front of one of the speaker racks. Even then you could hear everyone talking around you. Unacceptable, no one was happy with the volume. Such a shame.
Actually, I was in the pit, about 25 feet from the stage. After 3 or 4 songs we finally decided to move back and watch from the VIP grassy area, closer to the speakers, where we could hear the music better. Laughable that one could claim the volume was “great” when there were people around me in the pit constantly yelling to “turn it up” and complaining about the volume.
I’ve certainly read about the volume problems at Koka Booth before, but had never really noticed it, mostly because the 3 or 4 shows I had been to at Koka Booth weren’t really rock shows. For the first time, I understand what all the complaints are about. This is a serious, serious problem. I really have no interest at all in another rock show at this venue. Sucks because we have pit tickets (again) for the Phoenix show in June and now I’m not even really looking forward to it based on how bad the sound was last night.
Also, didn’t help that 1/2 the crowd was just standing around having conversations while the show was going on. It was like a freaking cocktail instead of a concert. Of course, at a normal venue with normal concert volume you wouldn’t be able to hold conversations.
I can’t expect to wake up with my ears ringing after an outdoor concert, but if any band had the capacity for making that happen it was My Morning Jacket. My buddy summed it up when he said it felt like we were standing around his car, listening to MMJ on the stereo. I hate to complain, but I need to say something. I just don’t remember Wilco being as restrained in terms of volume.
