The North Carolina DOT has released a questionnaire to survey how safe you feel your community is for riding a bicycle and walking. Included are questions about the need for bike lanes, sidewalks, more public education and more. The questions may seem a bit redundant in nature but worth filling our the survey if you bike or walk much in the area or would if there were better facilities on roadways for bicycles and pedestrians.

Fill out the 2011 NCDOT Statewide Public Input Questionnaire on Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety below.

Unfortunately this questionnaire only focuses on safety.  One of the main problems I have with walking is the lack of quality sidewalks in my neighborhood.  All are cracked, uneven, sunken into mud, broken off, etc.

    ^Or in many cases, nonexistent.

@Adam - you’re lucky to even have sidewalks! In fact, I’m a little jealous.

That was a pretty good survey overall. I hope that despite all of the state budget cuts we are being forced to endure, the results of the survey will lead to some good long term improvements to bicycle and pedestrian safety in Raleigh, and the state as a whole.

I would strongly recommend that EVERYONE fill this out. As a cyclist with no car, dependent on both the facilities by the city and cooperation of motorists, I find that it’s usually a mixture of lack of clear markings and understanding of cyclists/pedestrian rights that lead to dangerous situations.

Last Friday I was walking to class along Oberlin when, while walking during my turn at Cameron Village, a driver attempted to turn right on red as I was halfway across the street. I managed to jump out of the way but if motorists are this ignorant about pedestrian safety and laws regarding intersections in a pedestrian-heavy area like Cameron Village, I can’t imagine how bad it must be in areas less openly attractive to pedestrians and bikers like Southeast and North Raleigh.

As an aside, I plan to contact York properties tomorrow regarding that almost-collision. You’d think an area that markets itself as a shopping center for walkers would have more stringent rules for motorists passing through, especially considering the incident happened when Broughton High let out.

Lara - the streets around and through Cameron Village are publicly owned.  Stringent rules?  What do you expect York should do?

Adam—I took the survey last week, but I seem to remember a number of questions about sidewalks. (Under the rubric of “infrastructure.”)
