This upcoming Saturday, March 19th, the Wolfpack Environmental Student Association (WESA) will be sponsoring a pretty cool bike race, combining elements of an alley cat race and a scavenger hunt. In partnership with trianglefixies.com, an area biking blog, the race aims to build environmental awareness while also raising money to support WESA, which is a non-profit student organization at NC State.
An alleycat is an informal bike race that highlights the points of interest throughout a city via checkpoints. Often, checkpoints require a participant to complete an activity in order to continue on in the race. Our alleycat is a fun way for participants to support their community and experience Raleigh in a way that they would not have otherwise, while competing for lots of prizes.
WESA and trianglefixies have clearly gone to great lengths to secure sponsors and to offer some really awesome prizes. Awaiting the race winners are 2011 Hopscotch festival passes, jeans from Raleigh Demin, a Burt’s Bees gift basket, PBR swag, a bar tab at Foundation, gift certificates for Cup a Joe and Freshberry, and of course bike stuff – Chrome, DZR shoes, and more from Outlier and Reload. According to the event’s press release, they have thousands of dollars in prizes up for grabs, so this is a race that’s definitely worth checking out.
Registration begins at 11:30am on Saturday, with the race kicking off at 1pm at the NCSU Bell Tower, but they are offering early online registration at the website for half-price ($10 day of, $5 in advance). The race is open to riders of all ability levels, and will also include a trick competition and an after-party. For more information, early registration, and more details on prizes, visit wesacat.com.

Thanks, Stacy! I heard there’s a totally fine dude named Seb who is overseeing the organization of this. Can’t wait until the afterparty to show him my tricks!
That chump only had a small part in the planning. The WESA and triangle fixie folks are Alley Cat heroes.
These prizes sound siiick! Way to go, WESA! See you all Saturday.
So, are riders allowed to shift gears in this race, or is it only gear-less? Will people with normal bikes have their derailleurs disabled somehow?
Joe, all types of human powered wheels are welcome. In previous Alley Cats, rollerbladers have competed. This race is for everyman!
I just swooned over an event!! Is that possible? Is this love? If loving a bike race is wrong I don’t wanna be right.
Afterparty is at Ruby Red. I am DJing.
