With the one year anniversary of City Plaza approaching, it’s time for the three current sculptures in Art on City Plaza to make way for new ones. Three new sculptures will be installed before SparkCon 2010, with the official ribbon cutting on September 18. The selected pieces were revealed today by the City of Raleigh, in collaboration with Artspace and the Visual Art Exchange. What do you think?

I guess whoever choose these isn’t a fan of realism… or any art that is worth showing.

Not good, but better than the Barrel Monster.

“Yellow Tail” looks like a phallic symbol.  This reminds me of some of the works (I hesitate to say “art”) at the NC Museum of Art.  I’d like some venue where the artist explains to the viewing public (the ones that paid for the work) the artwork and significance of the title.  I remember one at NCMOA where “artist” declined to title his work soas not to confer his interpretation of the piece onto the viewer.  BTW, I do kinda like “Little Less”, and hope that’s what we paid for it.

I try to keep an open mind with ‘works’ such as this (as Joco Jack put it). I’d like to listen to another artist or an art teacher (curator) give their take and history.

If anyone has a definite opinion I’d say forward them to the city, so they know what the public wants.

Almost as cool as the giant mirror sphere in Charlotte. Swing and a miss again Raleigh.

It’s better than the cheese wedge tractor!

I like Joco’s idea.  The artist should be required to tell us what on Earth they were attempting to convey with their work.  Anyone can go into their garage, glue a plunger to a lawn mower, call it “la Unicorne”, and then claim others just don’t get their interpretation if they don’t like it.
That way, if the work sucks, the artist can’t play it off like it’s someone else’s fault.
Damn, art makes me cranky, huh?

“It’s better than the cheese wedge tractor! ”

That thing is great.  The “artist” had to put a plaque on it reminding people that it was in fact art and not a toy for children to play on.

It still makes me laugh every time I read it.

    ^^Exactly!
Somewhere, Brian Flanagan is furiously shaking his head in agreement with that.

At least we have art, and on a revolving basis at that. I think some of you would only recognize marble status of people as art. Open your minds just a little, haterz.

Please tell me we paid less for these than that mirror tower on Capital Blvd.
