The City of Raleigh recently spent 5.5 million of Federal Transit Administration grant money to purchase 15 new buses for the city.  From 9 to 11 this morning, you can go to Nash Square and see these new B20 biodiesel-fueled buses, and have the chance to tour one.

The purchase of public transportation by the city that runs on an alternative fuel source shows a continued effort by our city officials to adjust Raleigh to the realities of the 21st century.  Some other new features of the new CAT buses include energy efficient LED lighting, video camera, and automated voice system, and a lower floor to improve access to disabled or elderly riders.

Those are some expensive buses! Is that normal?

Does this mean they can retire the NCSU cast offs they’ve been working into some of their routes?  I cringe every time I see one of those pulling up to the stop.  Especially when I have a bike, since they have not rack.

CAT needs some brand and design help. a cohesive identity could help enrich the experience of using public transportation and lend to the urban context. granted the new TTA buses are taking that to an extreme with the neon green, but it is appreciated.

I don’t think the CAT buses are running on B20 anymore.  At least, the ones I’ve been behind don’t smell like my car does when I run B20 in it.  I see black belching smoke that smells like plain old petroleum diesel.
