New NCSU Library to Be Shaped Like Dust Buster

Remember the Jim Hunt Library that will be the signature building for NC State’s Centennial Campus?  Well, more info has emerged from the winning firm Snøhetta.

The News and Observer have a two page blurb up today about the future of the building and I’m not sure who decided this, but the metaphor being used to describe the new library is a dust buster. A very poor aesthetic description/analogy if you ask me. But, maybe it’s an N&O thing, because to them New Raleigh is just random essays on the internet.

Snohetta is one of the most progressive firms in the world currently.  If NC State gives them some freedom it should be a beautiful building. Luckily, they seem to be going away from the red brick for at least one building on campus. The building may look like a dust buster, but it definitely won’t suck.

An early drawing suggests the building’s likely footprint: an angular, vaguely Dust Buster-ish shape.

The new building, Nutter said, may have some brick, the material that dominates the campus, but it is not likely to feature much on the exterior.

I’ll be really excited to see what they come up with here.
