NV Men’s Clothing Closing at North Hills

This is a week of sad closings in Raleigh. NV men’s clothing in North Hills will close its doors in the coming weeks. Their closing sale will start on Friday with 50% off everything and will continue until all inventory is gone.

The arduous search for nice men’s clothing in Raleigh continues.

I am sad.  I love this store.

  • RaleighRob01/29 03:08 PM

Too bad…but with those crazy-high prices and this economy, I’m surprised it didn’t happen sooner.

  • Lisa Jeffries01/29 04:13 PM

I’m personally surprised more N. Hills retailers aren’t struggling. I think it’s because women can “rationalize” high-end attire purchases regularly as styles change, but fashion-forward expensive menswear isn’t ready to compete with khakis and button downs on sale at department stores.

  • TSnow2760401/29 04:23 PM

As someone who worked in men’s retail for years I will say that it’s a shame that guys think they are “dressed up” when they have on khakis and a buttondown.  Talk about a herd mentality.  Afraid to be an individual I guess.  And as for price: it’s all relative.

  • MMI01/29 04:51 PM

That’s gotta be an age-related thing, TSnow.  When I was around a Collegiate age (as a lot of Raleigh men are), I would have probably agreed with that statement.  Fortunately, I know better now, but I have had to pay a price (in years) to gain that knowledge.  smile

Then again, when I started wearing a High/Low combination a couple of years ago, I thought it was a rare confluence of “cool” and “stuff I can get away with wearing.”  Nowadays, I fear that it’s starting to be a part of that herd mentality.

As a chunky guy, I have to say that if they had carried clothes that I (or other XL folks) could wear I would have happily spent my money there. Hell, up until a couple of months ago I lived right above them so I would stop in all the time. I believe I saw one XL shirt there ever, and it was a skinny XL, which equals basically a Large at a dept. store. I realize they didn’t cater to guys like me, but that also means they didn’t get our money either.

  • RaleighRob01/30 08:47 AM

Isaac- That’s about what us S & XS guys have to go through at just about any other store in this state.  So I definitely can relate to frustration on that point.
(Even at mainstream department stores, I’ll find they’ll have like tons of M, L and XL…then maybe a few S and no XS.  Especially on the sale racks. It’s crazy.)

While I sadly could never afford NV unless I won the lottery, I have to give them credit for being one of the few stores in the Triangle to even recognize that there are men my size in existence.  tongue laugh
(Apparently those in charge of men’s retail think short men are rich or something…which is definitely not the case.)

  • Isaac01/30 09:42 AM

I would also like to add that, while I saw tons of people going into the store and showing up for special events, it was seldom that I saw someone actually coming out with a bag in their hands. I believe Lisa’s right in that, in general, women’s retailers (such as Scout & Molly) probably don’t have to worry as much about the average North Hills shopper deciding to just shop at JCPenny’s as much as the men’s shops do.

  • ErstStarvoBlofield01/30 01:36 PM

Although I thought they were expensive, I liked their stuff and I like the fact they were there.

The only issue was me.  My fat arse would not fit into anything they had so I quit going.  Now that I am on the “magical plan of the new me.” I was hoping to be back in there in a couple of months.  Guess not.

When I was in there, the women who worked there were very nice.  I still have a couple of shirts that were a little tight in the neck.  So when I do get back to the “magical plan of the new me”, I will be wearing my expensive shirts I bought at NV.

Always sad to see a ‘Mom and Pop’ type store close.  But at least they shot for something, even if they didn’t make it in the long run.

  • Chris01/31 10:21 AM

I’ll never understand why more stores at North Hills and Cameron Village don’t stay open later.  You see lots of stores catering to women at these places because its the stay-at-home moms or empty nesters who are able to shop when they’re open.  The influx of restaurants at CV, and the restaurants, movies, and now hotel at North Hills have more people there in the evening, but the locally owned stores all tend to close up at 6 or 7, even during the holiday season!  When is the professional guy, who presumably NV catered to, supposed to shop besides Saturday afternoon?  Southpoint mall stayed open until 11:00 pm on weeknights before Christmas!

  • Isaac01/31 02:07 PM

Yeah, when my wife and I lived at North Hills we were always blown away by the number of shops that closed at 6pm or so. As you said, Chris, I think most of them just cater to the ladies that live around there and don’t have to work during the day, and the other ones must really like the idea of owning their own place so they can be home before dark or something.

  • GD02/02 01:57 PM

I went to the sale and there were lots of shirts that were xl and even XXL.  I bought stuff there before and I bought something at the sale.  I def. didn’t find it that expensive for the quality of clothes they carried.  It will be missed.

  • MMI02/02 02:05 PM

So how much of a “sale” was it?

  • GD02/02 02:33 PM

    everything is half off.
    so a damn good one.

  • MMI02/02 06:38 PM

    Preesh, GD.

  • GD02/02 10:26 PM

no prob.  when I was there, it seemed to be a fair amount of stuff left- of course depending on your size, but some good deals to be had on some great denim.

Sorry folks, clothes do not make the man.  Cheap fabric and dim lighting attempt to lure shoppers into buying more junk they don’t need.  While it is your choice to buy pricy threads, I’d much rather spend on a travel adventure.
