October 9th Polling Experience

I went by two polling places this morning and both were virtually empty.  Russ Stephenson stood outside of Lacey Elementary on Ridge road along with a representative of Mary Ann Baldwin.  Baldwin’s signs peppered the schools public property along with a scattering of Bond and Clark for School Board.

N&O is reporting a “trickle” of voters and my voting machine read 116 at 9:30 this morning.  What was your experience?

I voted at Brooks Baptist Church this morning at 9am and there were only three or four other folks coming in to vote when I was there.  I think my machine read 136 at 9, but that seems high at such an early hour....maybe it was just 36.

No campaigning and few signs in the yards from all the candidates.  Definitely an uneventful experience, but let’s hope the votes mattered!

I did hear something on NPR that stated they expected 20% or less of eligible voters to vote.  That’s sad.

My boss walked around the office this morning asking everyone had they voted.  If not, he wanted to see the sticker before the end of the day.  A couple of people left work to go vote and came back!  The power of voice!

Haha. I was trying to be first at my precinct but only made 9th. That was at 7:20 am.

Traditionally, your voting surges come in the early morning, trickle through midmorning, boom at lunch, and tapper off until booming again between 5:00pm and 7:30pm.

  • Chad10/09 10:08 AM

I voted at 8:45 at my precinct and there was one other person there voting. My voting card was number 21—five shy of my lucky number.

  • David10/09 10:35 AM

26 is a number for losers.

  • Ccydney10/09 10:45 AM

I was 64th at 8am at Trinity UMC.  There were a couple of people outside, including Helen Tart.

Got to Brooks Ave Church of Christ at about 8:40 or so.  Just a few other people there...more poll workers than voters.  (Felt bad for the lonely guy from Kids Voting just sitting there with nothing to do.)
Parking lot was quiet too, but there was some lady standing by a pickup truck holding fliers for Baldwin...I quickly bypassed her like I hadn’t seen her.

  • Jedidiah10/09 11:01 AM

There wasn’t even a guy at that table when I got there 20 minutes Rob...so don’t feel too sorry for him, they must have found him another job.

  • Helen Tart10/09 11:54 AM

The number was 156 by 11am at Trinity UMC. We’re a high turnout precinct. I’ll bet we top 300 voters by 7:30pm.

Over at the polling place across from Lion’s Park it was 46 at 9:30am.

  • David10/09 12:23 PM

Hey Helen, you certainly got my vote.  I hope that you fair well today!

  • Justin10/09 12:38 PM

I got to the Chavis Heights community center around 8:45 and I was only number 14 and the only person there at the time.

  • Justing10/09 01:29 PM

I was #146 at the Cameron Village Library around 1pm.  It seems slow all around town.  I wonder if districts A and B are noticeable busier than the rest of the city?

  • erin10/09 03:31 PM

im going to trinity in about an hour to vote.  ill let you know what my late-day number is.  helen has my vote, too!

  • Devin10/09 04:16 PM

i was no.93 at Daniels Middle School at 12:30 today

the poll people looked bored out of their minds, and i’m relatively certain they were surprised that i was actually there to vote

  • erin10/09 04:52 PM

    410 at trinity.

  • brian_M10/09 07:00 PM

I was number 113 at Powell Elementary around 2pm. That is sad.

  • Jedidiah10/09 08:16 PM

County Wide:  only 11% of those registered to vote did so.

  • Shibby10/09 09:01 PM

I was the lonely voter when I got there and saw two others come in around 9:00 AM at Trailwood Drive Fire Dept.  I found time to catch up with some of the volunteers I knew on some neighborhood issues about excessive parking from parties and football games.  I also made sure to THANK the volunteers who spent their day working at the polls.

  • Meredith10/09 10:34 PM

Wow, Helen Tart was at Trinity UMC at 8am? I saw here there around 10am, and my husband voted at 7pm and said she was there then too. Sorry to see we’re missing such a hard worker in City Council!

  • 15010/10 07:23 AM

Now that it’s over, it doesn’t really matter, but I was #98 at Pullen at 6pm.
