In an innocent-sounding note on the City’s website today, it was announced that the oil spill at NCSU had been contained. Wait… what? Oil spill at NCSU?
A steam generation plant at NC State University sprung a leak on Monday, dumping unknown quantities of fuel oil into the environment. Information on just exactly how much oil was spilled, and where it ended up (besides what was found in the pipes at a local wastewater treatment facility) seem to have been deemed unworthy of mention in the news release.
City Has Contained NCSU Oil Discharge
The staff of the City’s Public Utilities Department has contained an oil discharge that culminated at the Neuse River Wastewater Treatment Plant (NRWWTP).An oil leak from a failed mechanical fitting on a fuel pump at the steam plant on North Carolina State University’s (NCSU) main campus prompted City of Raleigh wastewater treatment staff to divert the influent to a storage basin to protect the machinery at the Neuse River Wastewater Treatment Plant (NRWWTP).
“At this time, there have been no ill effects on the operating capacity of the plant,” said Public Utilities Director Dale Crisp.
