In what could only be called the Baklava of the South, Chef Alan Rubin of Murphy House brings fried pecan pie to the State Fair this year. Rubin also has deep-fried mac-n-cheese. Chef’s Dlites will have deep-fried mac-n-cheese as well as deep-fried banana pudding and fruit cobbler. Poppie’s Onion Rings will have corn dogs filled with cheese and hot peppers.
All of the oil used for frying food this year at the fair will be converted to biodiesel after use. All the generators at the fair also run on biodiesel. This year’s fair has a sub theme of green and has an exhibit called Green NC where fairgoers can learn about ways they can decrease their environmental impact. The fair opens to the public Thursday afternoon, watch New Raleigh this week for a full preview.

I tried the deep fried pecan pie today too, and it was amazing. Incredibly sweet and gooey, but not too hot, so I was able to take big bites without burning my mouth. It would be even better with ice cream or whipped cream.
Oh I cannot wait!!!
I second the rave reviews…the deep fried pecan pie would also be perfect with a 75 cent milk from the Dairy Association in the Scott building. Yum.
