One Progressive ACRe of Land

image  The News and Observer reported today in their Lifestyles section about ACRe, a local non-profit activist group that is located on the corner of Mayview and Chamberlain in Oberlin Village, a village not to far from the below mentioned Cameron Village.  Considering the conversation that has been happening on the subject of Cameron Village, it seems fitting to extend more information about another local entity that adds character and culture to the Oberlin/Cameron Village area.  ACRe is a handful of various activist organizations all wrapped up in one small building.  The various organizations located here include 1304 Bikes, Food not Bombs, ACRe, and Mayview Collective.  Each of these organizations have their own events and activities around the community and on their grounds, sometimes these activities overlap between organizations, especially on Sunday afternoons at the collective.  Sunday afternoon is the base time for 1304 Bikes which dedicates the afternoon. typically from 1-5pm, to fixing bikes for the community.  This includes folks who do not own a bike or currently own a bike but need a “new” innertube, reflector, or a quick tune up.  There are usually a handful of volunteers on site to help with most bicycle related inquiries. 1304 also sponsors local Alley Cat races around Raleigh and the area, usually headed by Bike Friends 919 which is indirectly related to 1304.  Calendar HERE

The folks at ACRe are very friendly and helpful and seem to add a breath of fresh air to an area that is slowly seeing 3 story housing and slight gentrification closing in on all sides of it. And the chicken coops in the backyard add yet another layer to this progressive and counterculture oasis.

Food Not Bombs meets every Sunday at 1pm in the ACRe Space to cook & serves food at Moore Square at 5pm.

Say what you will about the ACRe folks, they are hardworking and motivated people. I’m glad to know them.
