If you’ve never been delighted, moved, inspired, or fascinated by a puppet show before, or at least since you were a kid, you should give the Paperhand Puppet Intervention a chance. If you’re looking for something different from your usual rock show or movie, something that’s—what’s the opposite of commercial?—check out this show, tonight or tomorrow, at the NC Museum of Art. You may have seen Paperhand creations at Raleigh’s First Night celebration in recent years or in the streets of other cities protesting the WTO or School of the Americas. Puppets in this summer’s show range from hand-held cardboard cut-outs to giants that could give the whole audience a hug. Live music accompanies a series of stories that I think are equally enjoyable for people of all ages.
The show is tonight and tomorrow only, beginning at 6:30. Tickets go for a $10 donation.
Wow this looks really amazing!
I recommend watching the Giant Puppet show at the forest theatre in Chapel Hill. The play cool jam band music and you see all little kids dancing who will grow up to be hippies. Definitely pre-game in the woods before the show - you won’t be sorry.
this looks fantastic… I love the scale of the puppets against the human figures. I’m definitely going to try to make it out. Thanks for the tip Robin.
I saw this production in Chapel Hill recently and highly recommend it for all ages. The music is great, the issues are relevant, and the transitions between scenes are fantastically fluid. Be forewarned though, your face may hurt when you leave from excessive smiling.
Oh I forgot to mention—this group is based in Saxapahaw, NC. Supplement the other LOCAL ART you may see at First Friday with this excellent production.
Thanks to Robin for her first piece! Man I didnt even realize until tonight that THE PUPPETS ARE FREAKING HUGE!
I made it on the last night and I’m so glad I did. It’s rare to see something that is so overwhelmingly positive. I can’t even imagine how long it must take to make these things. The band was trully great… esspecialy the percussionists.
