Two of Raleigh’s oldest and most historic buildings will be on the move from 8:30 to noon, this Saturday, August 23rd. As part of the Blount Street Commons project, the Merriom-Wynne and Hume houses will be moved from their existing sites to new locations on the adjoining blocks. The three hour procession of these turn-of-the-century homes will be filmed by National Geographic to be featured on the show “Monster Moves”.
These structures will only move a few hundred feet, and the move will make the necessary room for the development of more than 400 new housing units proposed for the surrounding four block neighborhood. Although the quality of the new architecture is questionable, the improvement to the downtown urban environment is undeniable. Most of the project site is covered in asphalt parking lots and almost anything would be an improvement.
