The downtown location of Peak Fitness (formerly Capital Fitness) will close permanently on Tuesday. Doors were locked Friday with little explanation and Saturday employees informed gym-goers that their memberships have been transferred to Lifestyle Family Fitness, a gym located several miles away on Six Forks.
Gym staff told members that the company simply had too much debt to keep the club running, although they gave no indication that other Peak clubs would be closing. No one seems to know what will take over the building. (UPDATE: They are being evicted!) The Peak Fitness Web site does not mention anything about the closing. A flyer passed around to members stated: “Dear Peak Fitness Members, Lifestyle Family Fitness has acquired the membership base of Peak Fitness…Lifestyle Family Fitness will open our doors to all Peak Fitness members at any of our locations…”
If you signed up for membership at the downtown location, they said, you cannot cancel your membership. Under NC law, as long as they find a comparable gym within eight miles of the current location, Peak is not obligated to let members out of their contracts.
For those of us who enjoyed biking or walking to the gym, which is located on North Street off Glenwood South, the Six Forks location is quite a hike. However, members should be pleasantly surprised at the new club, which has nicer equipment as well as a basketball court, a lap pool and ample parking.
The company sought bankruptcy back in April and owned four area locations. Another closed abruptly in May.
That means this prime real estate (designed by Cannon Design and apparently owned by Empire Properties) will be available soon. What would be a good use for the newly available space?
UPDATE: From an article in Tuesday’s News & Observer:
Greg Hatem, whose Raleigh development company owns the downtown Raleigh Peak location, said he is in negotiations with another gym company to take over the 24,707-square-foot facility near the trendy Glenwood South area. That gym attracted many Raleigh residents and visitors—including then-Sen. Barack Obama as he campaigned for president in the Triangle.
A deal could be done within a week, Hatem said, and then “their goal is to be open within 30 days.”
