Peak Fitness Closes Downtown Location

The downtown location of Peak Fitness (formerly Capital Fitness) will close permanently on Tuesday. Doors were locked Friday with little explanation and Saturday employees informed gym-goers that their memberships have been transferred to Lifestyle Family Fitness, a gym located several miles away on Six Forks.

Gym staff told members that the company simply had too much debt to keep the club running, although they gave no indication that other Peak clubs would be closing. No one seems to know what will take over the building. (UPDATE: They are being evicted!) The Peak Fitness Web site does not mention anything about the closing.  A flyer passed around to members stated: “Dear Peak Fitness Members, Lifestyle Family Fitness has acquired the membership base of Peak Fitness…Lifestyle Family Fitness will open our doors to all Peak Fitness members at any of our locations…”

If you signed up for membership at the downtown location, they said, you cannot cancel your membership. Under NC law, as long as they find a comparable gym within eight miles of the current location, Peak is not obligated to let members out of their contracts.

For those of us who enjoyed biking or walking to the gym, which is located on North Street off Glenwood South, the Six Forks location is quite a hike. However, members should be pleasantly surprised at the new club, which has nicer equipment as well as a basketball court, a lap pool and ample parking.

The company sought bankruptcy back in April and owned four area locations. Another closed abruptly in May.

That means this prime real estate (designed by Cannon Design and apparently owned by Empire Properties) will be available soon. What would be a good use for the newly available space?

UPDATE: From an article in Tuesday’s News & Observer:

Greg Hatem, whose Raleigh development company owns the downtown Raleigh Peak location, said he is in negotiations with another gym company to take over the 24,707-square-foot facility near the trendy Glenwood South area. That gym attracted many Raleigh residents and visitors—including then-Sen. Barack Obama as he campaigned for president in the Triangle.

A deal could be done within a week, Hatem said, and then “their goal is to be open within 30 days.”

A City of Raleigh Parks and Recreation Community Center!!  (Dance, Art, track-out, yoga, gym, etc).  This would be great for families who live downtown so they wouldn’t have to drive.  A couple racquetball courts would be nice, too.

This is just ridiculous.  I literally signed up for a membership less than two weeks ago.  I joined there because I live nearby and can walk.  Now they got $25 out of me for a signup fee, $25 for June, and will get $25 more for July since I’m sure I’ll have to get a 30 day notice for my cancellation.

I would love to see it stay a gym under better management. I loved it when it was Capital Fitness and stopped going once Peak bought them. They were terrible and really drove it into the ground. Too bad.

Im sorry, the people who ran that place were morons.  Literally the biggest dumbasses ever.  Plus, whoever owned it, never brought in updated equipment.  It felt dirty after a while.  Plus, the two times I went there, I got sick with a cold.

i would love to see a multipurpose active center - with modern dance including zumba and hip hop classes and teams - i mean, there are some dance studios in downtown atlanta that have KILLER classes - with the majority of dancers in the classes that should be on that dance group competition show - and it is absolutely amazing… there is a place in nashville that has a large music venue on the bottom level and a coffee-house/open area in the top level where many things happen during the week - including a random breakdance meetup—but it was just awesome…

Here’s a hint for those who want a great gym close by.  Join the Alexander YMCA on Hillsborough St. next to the Velvet Cloak Inn.  It’s an easy walk/bike from Glenwood South by cutting through the beautiful Cameron Park neighborhood.
As for the Peak Location, I’d like to see it turn into something that supports the neighbhorhood during daylight hours.  Lately, everything opening is all about the night time.  Once the real estate situation stablizes and all the condos and apartments are occupied, the hood is going to need for daytime support.  I think a national retailer is going to have step into that space as a jump start.  I can imagine Pier One relocating from Cameron Village or downtown Crate and Barrel.  I’d love to see an Apple Store go in that location as well.  Another business that doesn’t exist in Raleigh that would be great in that space is a Barney’s Co-op.  The size of the space is about perfect for one.  Another store that would be good fit for that space is Urban Oufitters.  I think that would be slam dunk in the neighborhood.  A small urban grocer/drugstore would also be a fine idea.  What I don’t want to see go there is as follows: An Irish Pub (too many of them already), Sports Bar (ditto), Dance Club (not enough parking in the area to support it),
In the end, I hope that the space goes to a business, service, etc that supports the residents of the area first and visitors as a secondary consideration.

    Good riddance!

Just like the one in Cary (where I used to work out), they padlocked the doors there one day and that was it. No customer service and no explanation beyond the print on the front door.  We were told we had to go to another Peak within 8 miles. That one was in Apex.

I hope they get the stink of sweat and failure out of that place before they turn it into something else.

I don’t know that I’d trust gym staff to tell me what NC law requires. Especially given this from the “closed abruptly” link:

“Members at the Duraleigh Road location in Raleigh showed up to a padlocked door this month, despite a January order from the state attorney general’s office to give members advance notice of any gym closing.”

If Peak doesn’t let me out of my contract, my next phone call is to the state attorney general’s office.

Also: “The January lawsuit, filed by the attorney general’s office in Wake County, also stipulated, among other things, that Peak had to designate a single point of contact for consumer complaints and purchase and maintain bonds for customer refunds for all its North Carolina locations.”

Again, I’m not sure ordinary NC law is the most important factor in play here.

I am actually really bummed about this closing - not only for the fact that I could walk to Peak - but once you’ve been going to a gym every day at a certain time for years, you get really friendly with the other members. It was nice to see the same people with the same workout routine as you. And now I feel like we are all being displaced. I’d love if it stayed a 24-hr gym. Yes, I know that the Y and Seaboard are close by as well, but I enjoyed the random Saturday night when I didn’t feel like going out, but was able to go to the gym at 11 and still feel a part of the lively activity going on around me. Peak really wrecked this one. Sucks.

  • John
    06/15 09:27 AM

I know people who belong(ed) to Peak and they almost all had a miniscule monthly payment.  I have to ask what people expect from a gym where people are paying under $15 a month?  How in the hell could even begin to operate a gym for extended hours and keep the facility clean and operational?  I guess this one goes back to the old mantra: “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is”.

  • RaleighRob
    06/15 09:29 AM

It really sucks.  Lifestyle is quite out of the way.  Good if you’re making your monthly Costco run, but otherwise quite a hike.

I really really hope another gym company takes that spot and runs a good gym there.  Yes, Seaboard and YMCA are both also very convenient for downtown….but in comparison, they both cost a ridiculously high amount of money!  (Seaboard is literally almost twice the monthly fee, last time I checked, not counting specials.)

  • Jennifer
    06/15 10:05 AM

The Y is like FOUR times more expensive than Peak was—and if all you wanted was a dirty eliptical machine and a few weights, it was perfect.  I don’t need all the stuff the Y has—that’s why I quit after a five plus year membership. Plus, it was super crowded and I couldn’t even get any machine—not even the funny cross country skier thing most days.

This is a bummer, but a grocery store would make it all better. (and yes, only after cleaning out the sweat and failure).

The Y is $39 a month. $14 more than Peak with better facilities and it is far cleaner. Do yourself a favor and check it out. You’ll be pleasantly surprised. It has stayed in business for many year for these reasons.

  • Todd Morman
    06/15 12:06 PM

“I have to ask what people expect from a gym where people are paying under $15 a month?”

I don’t think it’s clear at all that offering cheap memberships is what drove this company into bankruptcy, or that a gym offering a cheaper option for members who don’t need the fancy crap can’t work in the Triangle. I’d bet it was other mismanagement from the geniuses at Peak Capital Holdings (remember, this was a small local ownership group in the Peak chain) that got them into the mess. Jennifer’s right; Peak (for all its general sleaziness compared to Capital) was just fine for folks who wanted a cheap, no-frills gym visit, and I wish other gyms would wake up to that audience as well.

  • Todd Morman
    06/15 12:09 PM

howaboutafresca, the Y also has a $110 (!) “joining fee.”

  • John
    06/15 12:16 PM

    Jennifer,
You couldn’t be more wrong about the new YMCA on Hillsborough.  It’s huge, clean and has tons of options for working out.  The old gym was not the newest or best facility in the world but I never thought it was as bad as you describe it.
In the last several years, the price of monthly payments at the Y have gone down to under $40.  Now, I have no idea if they are still charging joining fees or not.  When I joined almost 20 years ago, there was a pretty hefty fee.  Or, at least it felt hefty to me as a much younger person! grin
In the end, all these gyms are cheap in comparison to many other cities.  In NY, Chicago, Miami, LA, etc., gyms often cost over $100/month.

  • Jeb

    Spot me bro!!

  • hackles10
    06/15 12:29 PM

The Y has a $77 dollar joining fee.  Often they do promo specials, and this fee includes the first month of working out.  I think I paid $44 for my first month, then 29.50 from there on.  If you are under 29 it stays 29.50, over 29 and you bump up to 37.50.

It is an awesome facility, I suggest everyone go check it out!

  • RaleighRob
    06/15 12:36 PM

@John: “I have to ask what people expect from a gym where people are paying under $15 a month?”

Well…when I lived in West Raleigh, I belonged to Planet Fitness, and they were $10/month.  It was clean, machines in good condition, and open late.  (Granted, frills like a sauna or childcare wasn’t there, but not expected for such a good price.)  I only left them for Peak when I moved downtown due to distance.  But my point is, if a gym is run efficiently and costs are watched over, it doesn’t need very high rates to succeed.
Sure, 10 or 15 bucks may be the exception and not the norm, but I also think anything over 30-35 or so is questionable.

  • christian
    06/15 12:36 PM

I go to the lifestyle family fitness in question and it is very nice. The personal trainers are friendly and affordable (under 200 for 8 sessions). I think this space definitely needs to be retail, but co-ed and not just some upscale boutique for rich girls. Barneys co-op as an earlier commenter says is a brilliant idea!

  • John
    06/15 02:23 PM

Raleigh Rob:  I am guessing that the carrying cost of real estate outside the beltline is much cheaper than operating a business in Glenwood South.

    06/15 02:25 PM

This pisses me off. The 24 hour aspect was probably the only thing keeping me at Peak, none of the other gyms around have that, which is probably why they are always so crowded.  I had a tanning package there too that was recently purchased, I’m guessing that is just $$$$ down the drain for me?  BS.

  • Clyde
    06/15 02:40 PM

I used to work there when it was Capital (shortly after it opened).  It was a great gym and run by people that cared.  The rates were a little high, but you got quality for your money.  The customers were mostly neighborhood folks and I think they enjoyed the service.  At that time, the YMCA was meeting all the stereotypes for a inner-city YMCA.  It might be better now, but it’s hard to shake that past thinking.  Either way, the Capital Fit/Peak fiasco was destined to fail once the ownership started changing hands.  Parking will ALWAYS be a problem in that area, but that’s normal for living in any downtown city across the country.  The whole point to living in a high-rise community was to have everything within an easy walk, remember? (stop getting caught up in pomp and status, Downtown Raleigh!)

I think the space would be better used for a grocery store “express”.  And NO, not some cute independent grocer that will have to close in 6 months!  Del Haize (we know them as Food Lion) has successfully done the scaled down version throughout Belgium and Holland.  I think Lowe’s Foods or HT should step up for the opprotunity!  I agree we don’t need another club/eatery/boutique.  It’s time to see some STAPLE support go into what is supposed to be a neigborhood!

We just joined Seaboard under the $100 for 3 months special that they are running. I love it so far. Very clean and they provide towels. I wish they’d expand their hours though. 7 p.m. is too early to close on the weekends.

  • Seth
    06/15 04:15 PM

That’s a shame, but it doesn’t have to be, if we just follow the following steps:

    1.  Gut the inside of the building and prominently display a sign which reads “FREE JAGERBOMBS”.

    2.  Install intricate maze inside building.

    3.  Skanky, whore-tron Glenwood South patrons become trapped inside the old Peak Building, leaving Glenwood South once again unadulterated by rednecks from Clayton wearing tight pants.

  • howboutafresca
    06/15 04:34 PM

The Y does have a joining fee, but as mentioned above, they often have specials. I paid half that ($55), which works out to $4-5/month over a year. If you are under 29, I believe it is only $29 a month.

I believe that the Attorney General’s office is saying that if you signed up or renewed in the last 90 days then you can get your contract canceled and your money refunded. You should verify this with someone at the AG’s office and/or contact ABC Financial, Peak’s billing company.  ABC’s website is http://www.abcfinancial.com/

You show me a gym that only charges $15 a month and I will show you a gym that is dirty, has older equipment, and one foot in the grave.

A gym can not be operated well over the long term at $15 a month. How many gyms that charge so little have to shut their doors before people realize that?

I dont understand you guys. You grip about paying membership to a gym that $30 to $50 a month but you will go pay $8 for a single beer at one of the bars on Glenwood??

  • Paul
    06/16 11:55 AM

I went to lifestyle yesterday and it is definitely a lot nicer - I had signed up for 2 years with peak in January and lifestyle will honor 1 year of that, so I am out 6 months of my membership.  but, I know I’d pay alot more than $12/month at lifestyle, so I am OK with it.

A grocery or trader joes would be fantastic in that location.  With all the condos around there I am sure the demand for a local grocery would be pretty high…if they can afford the rent.

  • RaleighRob
    06/16 12:10 PM

Tried Lifestyle yesterday evening.  Nice and clean and good equipment but location is way less convenient.  (In a funny way, it’s quite a different vibe…lots of soccer moms & minivans and Jonas Brothers Music Videos on the TV.)

Due to being out of the way, I’m not sure if I’ll stick with it.  The N&O this morning says Empire is trying to get the downtown Peak building leased to another gym company.  I’m very interested in seeing how that will play out.

  • Micah
    06/16 01:48 PM

Empire probably is trying hard to get another gym to occupy the space.  Depending on how much back rent they owe, Empire probably has a lien on all the equipment and fixtures inside the space.

  • hnhg
    06/16 04:11 PM

Even though the gym needed some work - sorry to see them go.  Location was real convenient.  Heard rumor today that trainer Chris Cherico is opening a gym somewhere in Glenwood South.

  • J
    06/16 07:19 PM

Leave it a gym, new owner.  Done.  Not driving to Six Forks, Duraleigh, Clayton, Garner, Virginia or Jersey to work out.  I’m not lifting weights anywhere that requires a passport or a 2oz water bottle.

    Lame.

And has anyone suggesting they turn this space into a grocery store noticed it’s two-stories!?!  And yes, they do have them… in EUROPE where space is at an uber premium.  Greg is not going to gut that building when the space is clearly able to support its current function.  Locker rooms/wet facitlities = plumbing = expensive to rip out through concrete floors, etc.  Not to mention the added cost of retrofitting it for a new purpose that may or may not succeed (especially in this economy!).  In my opinion, a grocery store would have worked perfectly in the building across the street that Cherry Modern Furniture used to inhabit.  Huge space, nice storefront.  Loading dock.  Done.

    Win.

Was the management at Peak bad?  Yes.  Were there bozo employees who Facebook stalked?  Yes.  Was it dirty.  Clearly.

    Fail.

Rent the space to another gym company.  Hose that piece down and burn the yoga mats.  Lease parking from that fugly condo parking deck behind the gym (We all know it’s empty… *ahem, vinyl windows anyone?).  Rip off ALL “adornments” Peak made to the facade, i.e. the “wrought” iron that defines the ‘fabulous’ new tiki patio, (really y’all?) and that over-compensatory jaundice sign of doom.  Also, please get a non-jacked bike rack.

If not, please give back money.

    Now.

    Thanks.

Man, all this fuss about gym prices? In San Francisco, a nice gym with amenities like Lifestyle costs $165/month! And you guys get your under $15 peak membership transferred to a gym like that? Seriously, despite the location inconvenience, you Peak fitness members should view this as a major lucky break. It’s an upgrade at a fantastically huge discount.

  • MMI
    06/17 03:21 AM

Actually, the cost of moving the equipment out alone would be close to prohibitory.  Think about how much manpower and how many vehicles would be necessary to move thousands & thousands of pounds of weight & equipment.  The easiest move by far is to move in a new gym tenant.

  • CF
    06/17 08:40 AM

I’ve been going to this gym almost daily since it opened as Cap Fit.  Yeah, the Lifestyle Family place is really clean and well maintained, but I could walk to Peak Fitness.  All I need is a treadmill and some free weights, so Peak worked out just fine for me.  It had certainly devolved into a bit of a dump under the latest management, but I’ll take a downtown dump over a suburban strip mall gym with “Family” in the title any day.

  • RaleighRob

    @J: My thoughts exactly.

TOTALLY!! Speaking as an ex-member of Seaboard, I can say it’s a shame that more competent people don’t run it.  They’re unorganized, dishonest,  have no clue about managing a gym.  Oh, and forget about getting a call back if you have a question or concern for management - no matter how many messages you leave.  It’s like high school kids were left to run a business.  Not sure they know what they are doing in there (and it’s too bad b/c the gym is pretty).

  • jm

I’ll run right out and get a squat rack, a bench, and a full set of dumbells and barbells for my one bedroom condo.  Also, I run outside every day, but sometimes it rains or is very cold and I’d still like to get my run in.  Why don’t you go buy a stamp collecting kit so that you have something to do besides comment on my workout routine.

  • franz
    06/18 10:15 AM

@micah - It looks like they were booted from the building for not paying rent. The court docs show that they haven’t paid a penny since filing for bankruptcy, and that has amounted to over $97k.  Based on what was published when they filed, they ALREADY owed a couple hundred thousand.  It’s pretty clear that Peak is run by nothing more than a couple of shysters.  Perhaps the new gym will employ the Peak owners, so they can pay their debt to the landlord and to society by mopping the floors or scrubbing the toilets, the kind of job that they are qualified and more suitable for.

  • Micah
    06/18 02:11 PM

If I was a stamp collector and didn’t want people to make comments about it, I wouldn’t speak of my stamp collecting on a public comment board.  I’m not faulting anyone for having a gym membership. Obviously they are popular places all over the world.  You can spend your money on whatever you like.  I personally won’t rent when I can own.

Trader Joe’s is getting ready to open on 6 Forks Road. Doubt they’ll be opening one 3 miles away at old Peak Location anytime soon.

Lifestyle is everything the writers above indicated - or was until the last week or so. Now that LFF is offering Peak members the same deal they had at Peak - whether it was $15 or $25 (and I’m curious to hear from Peak members what they were paying), the place has become overcrowded as a result. The parking lot is packed, classes are full (which is fine), there are no free machines, the sauna is jammed, there are lines 10 to 20 people deep at the front desk to check in, and there are stacks of people in the aisles of which the fire marshall might well disapprove. The existing LFF members, who pay from $33 to $39 a month and many of whom paid a joining fee of $50 to $75, have been given no information at all about the influx of new members or about plans to increase class offerings (which are nowhere near as large in # as the YMCA’s class list). My friends who take water aerobics (I have not been in those classes) say that the small pool is packed and equipment is short, sometimes the equipment closet is locked. I know several LFF members who are looking for new gyms as a result. My fear is that if LFF emphasizes new members over old, and the old members who are paying the fees that support the place leave, it will go downhill fast. There has to be a balance between sales and service, and I’m not seeing that at LFF right now.

That being said, the staff is in general quite wonderful there - but corporate offices are clearly pushing the staff to increase enrollment at rapid rates. They are clearly giddy about the opportunity to grab as many Peak members as possible no matter the cost to existing members or the long term health of the club.

I imagine the same thing is happening at Golds, which the N&O indicated is also offering special deals to Peak members.

^Lilleth—My bet is this is mostly a temporary influx.
If you’re talking the LFF at SixForks/WakeForest, then from what I hear, a good chunk of the Peak folks will be back downtown once Empire Properties gets another gym in that building.  (Which is what they told the N&O they are working on.)  So my advice to the LFF members would be to hold on a while and see how this pans out.

Thanks Raleigh Rob. I think what is really interesting is that LFF and Golds are imitating the mistakes Peak made (and most gyms tend to make). Since they are largely unregulated, they always emphasize quantity over quality, sales over service. When will these businesses learn that they have to strike a balance between the new and the old, the existing membership and new clientelle-just like all of life.

I almost joined Peak fitness due to the 2 block proximity to my house, but instead opted for Planet Fitness on Western blvd. due to a friendler staff, nicer equipment, etc. it was worth the drive. I must say that I have been very pleased with this decision over the past three years and have very little complaints about their facility. As a former Beyond Fitness member, Planet fitness is infinitely better managed and the employees are cleaning the equipment constantly.
Planet Fitness charges even less than Peak did and yet does not seem to have the same financial problems and member complaints. I am hoping that Planet Fitness will take over the space so I can enjoy one of their facilities closer to home. If not, the revival of the barristers ball there would also be great! What that block can do without is yet another overpriced grocery store, retail outlet or homogenous bar just like every other on glenwood south.

Totally agree with the Lifestyle member of old.  Gym now way overcrowded.  Extremely irked that the Peak members are coming in for $15 a month when I am paying $35 for a basic membership.

Lifestyle has no towel service, limited tv channels, and I really don’t know if the sanitary spray works because I keep getting sick and I clean my machine pre and post workout!

Customer service is spotty there even when dealing with the GM.  I am really beginning to feel that they don’t care about you once you sign up.  Thank God I can cancel the contract at anytime.

I really like Seaboard. Much, MUCH better than Peak was.

I enjoyed Peak. Late night workouts, a heavy bag that was heavy, and ample equipment for $20/month. Awesome. I don’t see why anyone is complaining. If you wanted nicer equipment, then get ready to pay for it. If they upped the price on you to pay for it, many of you would be complaining then too.

Hell, us men don’t need fancy equipment anyway. if you want gimmicky, LA style equipment, go to Seaboard

But, they cost about 2-3 times more and is much more compact. Frankly, it’s not even that impressive or worth the extra cost. treadmill, heavy bag, roman chair, a bench and free weights are all I need.
