Finally, the spot left vacant when Capital City Grocery closed has been filled. Phydeaux, a popular pet supply store in Chapel Hill, signed the lease yesterday for the entire space held by the grocery store. The pet store has been voted “Best Pet Specialty Store” in the Triangle four years in a row in the Indy, so a proven business opening in the space will be a welcomed replacement to the floundering grocery store.
The Raleigh store will carry the same products as the Chapel Hill location, with a range of cat, dog and small animal supplies. The owner, Frank Papa, says that the new edition to the Phydeaux family plans to open as soon as possible, which will most likely be in the fall. Papa said, “We have had Raleigh customers clamoring for a Raleigh location for quite a while, and the time and location is right,” so Raleigh folks, here ya go.
Other than La Di Dogs in Cameron Village that sells “couture clothing for dogs”, there is not a dedicated pet supply store inside the belt line that I have seen, so the location couldn’t be better. Welcome to the neighborhood.
Capital City Grocery Frank Papa Phydeaux
Glad to hear about Phydeaux but please don’t forget about http://unleashedmutt.com/ at Lake Boone Shopping Center. I know that it’s not ITB but it’s pretty dang close and they are great folks who really care about the animals.
womp womp…
Good to have some retail move in downtown. I liked having Cap City grocery there, and would have been excited for Tylers or another large bar, but I can get on board w/this.
Yay! I’m stoked about this. I’ve been to the C.Hill Phydeaux & it’s really great (really good selection and surprisingly affordable stuff too). My dog is gonna be one happy little bugger. ![]()
Unleashed is inside the Beltline: http://unleashedmutt.com
Yes, Unleashed is GREAT. I will still shop there.
Unleashed is great….one local business i hope succeeds…the people are great and they are all about the animals!...they are also just OUTSIDE the beltline….
Wouldn’t it help to say “on the Beltline” for businesses like Unleashed? Crabtree and North Hills are “on the Beltline”... marginally convenient to downtown residents, perhaps, but also marginally convenient to residents of Brier Creek or Fox Road. A sharp distinction between ITB and OTB is pointless for businesses that are half a mile either side of the Beltline.
Even the N&O follows this approach by having a “midtown” supplement on Wednesdays that’s different from their “North Raleigh” supplement.
As a Mordecai resident with a two-dog family, I am personally thrilled to know that Phydeaux will be so close by! Frank’s Chapel Hill store is without a doubt the best pet-store in the Triangle. I was really shocked at how competitive his prices are with the big-box pet stores while the quality of his product far exceeds. The former Cap. City Grocery space is about 14,000sqft, making the soon-to-be Raleigh Phydeaux a good 4,000 feet larger than the Ch Hill location. I’m interested to see what he does with all that extra space. Phydeaux has a firm commitment to carrying only healthy pet foods (no corn, fillers, etc) and smart products at the cheapest cost possible. While I have grown to love Unleashed over the past few months (can’t beat the Self-Serve Dog-Wash Room in winter months and the folks there are great!), Phydeaux will get most of my pet business. ![]()
Any word on what happend to The Barkery, formerly at Blount and Cabarrus Streets?
Even better, Peace China can expand their menu!
Olde School…..........best comment in the history of newRaleigh.com!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought Tylers Taproom was going in that space
bwahahahahaha!!!
Olde School…awesome comment…i giggled…
Guys, Tyler’s was/is going in the space between Peace China and Ace Hardware. It was never going in to the spot where Capital City was.
: ( .... as much as we love our pup, the space is much better suited for something else
@boylanhghts: Well it’s better than having nothing there and that location has had a big void in it for a while. I understand what you mean though. ![]()
I agree that something is better than nothing, I think. I am not sure this place will be able to make their rent in the downtown pet “specialty” market (didn’t really know there WAS a pet specialty market), but I guess we will see. Perhaps they got a good deal from the landlords since the space has been vacant for so long. I am also surprised that over 35K worth of rack-mount central refrigeration equipment is not going to be utilized. I’m guessing they will remove it?
but will they have the coffee bar?
More retail around downtown is good, but I wish there was a good store for people-food near my house ![]()
people food would be awesome in the downtown area…i wish Cap City could have made it…
I don’t care for dog food, sort of bland. Maybe with a little salt.
OMG…still laughing at Old School. Funny Shit!
Love the new store! Friendly, informed folks that like their work. Wish they would carry the Flippy Flopper (soft frizbee for dogs).
