Portraits of Raleigh Sneak Preview

A few months ago, the Raleigh City Museum put out a call for entries to local photographers for submissions for a new exhibition entitled Portraits of Raleigh: Images of a City and Her People. Over 360 images were submitted, each with a different perspective on what constitutes a ‘Portrait of Raleigh.’ The exhibit is going to be broken into two series, with Series One opening this First Friday, March 6, from 6-9.  Twenty-two images are framed for display, along with a selection of digitally projected images. Below is a preview of some of the amazing photography in the show.

This photograph of the old Saunder’s Ford building, now Artspace, was taken by Marshall Wyatt, and is one of the printed images included in Series One.

Shawn Rocco captured this image of the fair for part of his ‘Cellular Obscura’ series, which are all photographs taken from his cell phone. This image is one of the printed pieces for Series Two, which opens on June 5.

Anyone recognize this laundromat? I happened to spot it yesterday while driving, and can see why the photographer, Jan Watson, saw the place as iconic. This image is part of the digital projection selections for Series One.

Before Pilot Mill underwent renovations, Diana Bloomfield took this photograph as part of the project documentation process. This image is part of the digital projection selections for Series One.

Kitty Miller’s photograph screams Hayes Barton/old time 5 Points, and was inspired by time spent with her grandmother. This image is one of the printed pieces for Series One.

This image by James Gries uses a technique called tilt shift photography, which almost make the photograph seem as though it were taken of a miniature model. It is one of the digital image selections for Series One.

The exhibit opens with a First Friday reception this Friday, March 6, from 6-9 at the Raleigh City Museum. There will also be live music from the Southern String Band. For more information about the exhibit, including a list of the featured photographers, visit the Raleigh City Museum website.
