Reader David Turnage brings us some on location reporting of an R-Line wreck on Peace Street at the corner of Capital Boulevard just in front of Finch’s this morning at 9am.  We don’t usually go there on NR but we have been waiting for a decent R-Line accident- as well all know- there is no free in this world, and this morning your trip to GloSo was delayed with a T-bone.

Uh-oh. I guess it was bound to happen eventually.

This is the type of accident I envision every time I put my bike on the front of a CAT bus. I hope vehicles are all that was damaged.

Clearly the car’s fault and not the bus’s, right?

The good news, there was probably no one one the bus.

Jeff: I’m very familiar with this intersection since I drive through it twice a day. There is a high probability that it was the car’s fault. I would say that at least three times a week I have a near miss with cars making the left hand turn onto Peace from the Capital exit. They are very impatient and take crazy chances pulling out in front of oncoming traffic. Part of the problem is that the center turn lane disappears right at the intersection, and some people mistakenly think they can get to the middle and hang out until cars pass, but then suddenly realize the lane doesn’t exist on the east side of the intersection. Very dangerous spot.

I have to make that left turn every day after work….when it’s raining…i avoid that intersection because it is nearly impossible to turn left…coming off Wade, I take West St, on the ramp to Capital…at least there is a light at that intersection…

It’s a bad intersection when it’s busy. I think that car driver wasn’t using good judgement.

Peace street is a traffic nightmare for its entire length. The Glenwood intersection is the worst, for timing of the lights, FUBAR lane shifts, and pinheads trying to illegally turn left.

The aforementioned turns on and off of Capital are poorly engineered, as is the unnecessary light for the two straight lanes at eastbound Peace st and Capital north—those turning left off of Capital have a median protecting them.

Losers using the right turn only lane coming up westbound peace at Glenwood to sneak into the straight lane have caused plenty of near misses as well…and the light timing at St mary’s and Peace is a problem…and the blind turns from people coming out of Starbucks.

I could go on…Peace st is perhaps the most badly engineered traffic situation I’ve encountered in Raleigh, and thus I’m surprised there hasn’t been a wreck like this already and hope nobody’s hurt from this one.

Looks like the car’s fault for sure.  But I agree that Peace Street is worth avoiding when you can.

The Peace Street McDonalds parking lot is dangerous, both for entry/exit and simply driving within the lot.  Also there’s the guy who (legally) parks in the right lane of westbound Peace near the Krispy Kreme.  Forces cars to move over then move back right away.

I only attempt the left turn from southbound Capital onto Peace on Sunday mornings…

Love and hate the R-line.  Great because its free and gets you around.  Hate it because when i’m driving down Glenwood, and the R Line makes a left off of (think its Jones st?) onto Glenwood, the road isn’t’ big enough, and it almost hits the cars stopped at the red light unless they back up.

^I think you’re talking about the left from Tucker Street.  I would say the logical fix would be for the city traffic services to re-draw the white line cars are supposed to stop at, a few feet back.  They’ve already modified some parking lanes near various R-Line Stops to accommodate the buses, so I would hope they’d fix this issue, too…if they knew about it.  But on the other hand…this is a very common issue at just about any place in the city where various buses (CAT, TTA, etc) have to make sharp turns.

The “Contact New Raleigh” link is dead, but a half hour ago there was a high truck-low bridge situation on Peace Street at the RR overpass near Logan’s.  They were unloading the beer truck, which was jammed pretty good and might still be there.

And by a half hour ago I mean around 7:45 a.m.  Your server is an hour off, at least for article posting times.
