Art on the Edge is a new contemporary art festival—a three day event—bringing to Raleigh the internationally recognized performing arts group Strange Fruit and widely acclaimed exhibition artists, Architects of Air. The festival will be both outside and inside of the Progress Energy Performing Arts Center.
Levity III (above image), is a 10,000 sf installation by Architects of Air. This luminarium is described as a series of “labyrinthine tunnels and inspiring, spacious domes, (where) visitors move in a medium of saturated and subtle hues.” Architects of Air are based in England.
Strange fruit, from Austrailia, are somewhat reminescent of Cirque de Soleil in their approach to contemporary performance art: as they “fuse theatre, dance and circus.” There will be three shows on that Saturday, August 23, outside the Performing Arts Center on Lichtin Plaza.

Art on the Edge is the third of four new festivals of the Arts Alive on Lichtin Plaza series. Each festival is designed to showcase the richness and diversity of contemporary art and enliven the outdoor Lichtin Plaza at Raleigh’s beautiful Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts. The Capital Holiday Arts Celebration, the first festival in the series, was held November 24, 2007 and highlighted some of the Triangle’s premier holiday arts performances. Puppet Fusion, a celebration of the art of puppetry, took place March 6-7, 2008. To culminate the series, a festival featuring the works of North Carolina’s visual arts and fine crafts community will be held October 18-19, 2008 on Lichtin Plaza. Artsplosure serves as the producer and organizer of Arts Alive on Lichtin Plaza.

This sounds great. With the performance of Strange Fruit being free, and the entrance into Levity only 5 bucks, sounds like a perfect way to spend the afternoon on a budget!
I took the kids on Thursday afternoon right after Luminarium opened. It was amazing. If it leaves without you seeing it, you have no business complaining about cool things coming to Raleigh.
Agree, VaNC. Unfortunately I didn’t get to see the Luminarium due to a majorly long line on Saturday and had someplace I had to be later.
But I did see the performance of Strange Fruit in the plaza. WOW. They were outstanding! I hope they come back to Raleigh again—it was great fun to watch.
I thoroughly enjoyed the few events I went to this weekend. I think I spent more on beer watching The Old Ceremony than I did on everything else added together. The Architects of Air sculpture was awesome inside. I just wish when I went that there were less kids. The one good thing is the line moved really fast when I was in it. Strange Fruit was awesome. I got worried for them at times thinking the poles would snap! I would like to watch them perform for an hour next time and I would be more than willing to pay. I will be sure to go to Art on the Edge next year.
