Raleigh Art Stars for $300 or Less

Reposition is a show of ten local artists in transition; your last chance to catch many of them before they leave the city.  Tonight from 6-11pm with music by No Dollar Shoes

Reposition is smartly positioned as a budget show, an opportunity to pick up some great Artists’ works for $300 dollars or less.  It also represents one of the last shows organized by the city’s beloved Tracy Spencer.

From July 25th - August 10th
The Ladies Hat Shop next to the Raleigh Times

Open Saturdays & Sundays 1-5pm & First Friday 6 - 11pm and by appointment email: tracy.spencer (at) gmail.com

Below their artist statments:

Lindsey Lynch:
Lindsey is from Wilmington, NC and has been interested in photography since she could hold a camera. In her work she captures not just surroundings but a feeling, and the emotion that was evoked at the time. Memories made possible by visual representation. Inspired by the past she embraces romantic notions, documenting on film in varying formats. Lindsey has been living and working in Raleigh since 2002 and founded Lindsey Marla Photography in 2006.

Tracy Spencer:
Tracy Spencer organized Reposition in order to clear out her studio for her upcoming move to Brooklyn, NY, where she will be attending Pratt Institute as a Master’s student in Painting and Art History. Her work has been exhibited locally at Rebus Works, Flanders Art Gallery, Flywheel Design, and as part of the HL Roaming Gallery’s five biannual exhibits of emerging artists.  She attended NCSU College of Design and received degrees in both Art and History in 2004. Using denim and latex paint, Tracy creates low reliefs that explore universal yet intimate preoccupations such as balance of power and group versus self.

Derrick McNew:
Somewhat snazzier than sneakers and designer jeans.
Likes to think about garbage men, carpenters, mechanics, and farmers.
Went to school for making and thinking.
Got degrees in both.
Has a resume.
Even better in real life.

Jason Whitman:
Jason’s prints showcase personalities that contain the same foibles and qualities of his friends.  They aren’t intended as shortcomings or weaknesses, just a menagerie of emotions.  We can be jerks, we can be saints.  That’s just our nature.  You can see more of jason’s work at http://www.altardbeast.etsy.com.

David Eichenberger:
The most subtle things are what gives David inspiration: insects, the shape of leaves, watching people spacing out in public places, trapped birds in the expanse of a warehouse.  All of these images are compiled in a continuing discovery of a utopia that will eventually be transformed into a children’s book.  In other words, they’re just paintings for paintings’ sake.  David received a BFA in Illustration from Savannah College of Art and Design, and currently lives and works in Raleigh.

Andy Heymann:
For the past four years, Andy Heymann has been refining pop art portraiture.  His work was recently featured at Morning Times Gallery, Riviera Resto, and Atomic Salon.  Andy is a graduate of the College of Design at NCSU, where he learned color theory, rule bending, and how to get a couch to stay on a roof.  He is the president of Raleigh Design Lab, a graphic design firm specializing in web and print design.  When not in front of a computer or canvas, Andy can be seen frolicking the streets and kickball fields of Raleigh on one of his many old road bikes.

Jackson Hodges:
Jackson Hodges is an artist living in Raleigh, NC.  He graduated with degrees in both architecture and art from the North Carolina State University College of Design.  Using drawing as his primary medium, Jackson creates pieces with dual focus.  His aesthetic combines technicality enriched with emotion and creative non sequitur.  He uses his affinity for objects, locations, and personas of interest to carefully compose vignettes reflecting his own interpretation of environments and experiences.

Emily Huffman:
Emily Huffman is a visual artist and massage & bodywork therapist. She has a BFA from Tulane University in New Orleans, and is a member of Bonded Llama Artist Studios in Raleigh.  She has exhibited in several local spaces, including a solo show at The Morning Times Gallery, and her work has been featured on the contemporary art website dailyserving.com.  Her art is primarily oil paintings on canvas and paper, and sculpture & installation.  Her paintings involve fluid, dynamic fields and layers that give context to abstracted symbols and imagery. Her sculptures and installations include materials such as cast metal, resin, fibers, found object, and organic natural materials.  To view images of her work, visit http://www.emilyhuffman.com. Emily is currently involved in a collaborative piece with The Body Center Project.  ‘Thresholds,’ a performance, video and installation work, will be presented to the public on 8.1.08.  For more information on the project, visit

Mollie Earls:
Colorful plastic insect wings, unearthed iron fragments, encyclopedia pages, vintage Cracker Jack prizes and miniature perfume bottles merge with pearls, garnets, crystals, amethyst, peridot and more in Mollie Earls’ latest jewelry exhibition at the Ladies Shop.  Her whimsical adornments are lovely and curious.  Those with exceptional style and aptitude are encouraged to attend and acquire…

Casey Porn:
Casey Porn is a visual artist and small dog enthusiast living and working in Raleigh, North Carolina. She is a graduate of North Carolina State University’s College of Art and Design, and was awarded The Regional Emerging Artist Residency at ArtSpace NC in January of 2008. Porn paints bold graphic images using black and white line work, and illuminates them against brightly painted backgrounds. The majority of her work is inspired by small animals with big dreams....and yes, her last name REALLY is Porn.
