As if banning smoking in Moore Square was not enough, the Raleigh City Council has now put a full ban on drinking coffee in any of the city owned public spaces. You will no longer be able to have drip, lattes, frappuccinos, or even instant coffee brewed at your house while walking through or reading your book in Moore Square, Nash, the Capitol Grounds or City Plaza. The fine ranges from $20 for the first offense to being banned from even entering the public space for a year. The worst offense, spilling coffee on the sidewalk, will be met with your mug shot being posted on all trees and lampposts in the public square.
This explains why Moore Square will probably not have a cafe anymore. The odd thing about this news is that City Plaza has a Starbucks facing it so I guess the City of Raleigh doesn't want any patrons of the Marriott hanging out in City Plaza eating a Jimmy John's sub and drinking a latte. I guess all the yuppies and hipsters running around no longer had cigarettes to toss on the ground, so they've moved on to littering coffee cups.
When reached for comment, City Council member Bonner Gaylord said "Since we just cured smoking, coffee was the obvious next target. Plus, it was Thomas' (Crowder (City Councilor for District D)) idea"

April Fool! You got me. BTW, why does everybody blame Thomas? He is a wonderful guy and a terrific Council member. We love him in Boylan Heights! He is a strong advocate for strong neighborhoods. He cares about quality of life in neighborhoods. We want to have a We Love Thomas Day.
The previous comment is hilarious, as funny as this article. I blame Thomas for Everything. Of course, you must be his neighbor AND it’s a political year! Crazy season!!!
I can’t wait till you fuckers get sued!!
Glad i can still drink tea!
Not sure if that’s part of the joke, but you actually can still smoke in Moore Square (and Nash) even after the July 1 ban goes into effect for all other Raleigh parks.
This was great! But if the Legislature has its way, you can still pack your concealed weapon.
Who needs coffee in a park when I can bring a hand gun….
bwahahaha!!!
what a relief! for a minute I thought I had to stop smoking cigarettes through my coffee cup.
