Convention Center Shimmer Wall Installation Begins

Installation started today on the Raleigh Convention Center’s Shimmer Wall. Six panels so far on the first bay with many more to come. 79,464 aluminum ‘pixels’ will compose this 9,000+ s.f. LED backlit art installation wall. The schedule, according to the construction crew, will be 1/2 of each vertical bay installed per day which means at least 28 days of work.  Panels with colored chips should start tomorrow.

The result of this installation will be an icon for downtown Raleigh.

It’s rainbow-colored and faces the Warehouse District.
Am I the only one who sees some humor in that?  wink

I saw the installation last night as the sun set and just the little corner was awesome!  I think it will be quite a nice addition to a cityscape that could use some unique features.

Is that rainbow-style pic the way it’s going to look, or is it a huge display thing that is video and/or computer controlled?  Can they change what is “projected” on there?

I was skeptical at first, but man! this thing is going to look great. good work!

These things look good at first but after a few years the cost of maintaining them becomes to much and then they start to breakdown and look like crap. Static art - sculptures, ect, are best.

    More “boring” for downtown Raleigh…
Can we (Raleigh in general) not do something original for once?  Or how about just exciting...I’ll even take that over original considering where we are.
