Raleigh Denim Talks Spring 2010 to Style

Photo:  Nick Pironio

Last week Sarah and Victor Lytvinenko checked in with style magazine and talked about what’s new with Raleigh Denim.  Just this spring the team had its NY Barney’s debut of the men’s line. Now the rugged jeans are a hit and prepared to expand their distribution, showing off that Raleigh ruggedness.

Not just for the boys, Sarah and Victor first premiered their first women’s jeans at last year’s SparkCon Fashion Show. (Click through to see photos of that line).  Now they are bringing 3 lines to market: Trouser, boyfriend, and “Thin Cut” all making their retail premier at Steven Alan this week.

Update: As a local, Men can pick up Raleigh Denim at Stitch on the corner of Wilmington and Hargett.  They also have some of the new women’s jeans and more men’s cuts available at the factory, out at 1407 S. Bloodworth St Monday - Friday from 9 - 6.

Nice jeans but maybe they could eventually make some that regular people can afford? $280 bucks for jeans…really?

  • adam!!08/05 06:17 AM

yeah, total agreement with the first comment. $300 for jeans is awfully expensive. i thought that “local” should be more cost effective than not.

Well, there are various reasons that people buy designer jeans. I am having a hard time figuring out the draw of these jeans, though. They don’t look that remarkable, and though it may be just fabulous that they are sewn on a vintage machine I don’t see how that adds to the value. “Made in Raleigh” is kind of cool, but not $200+ cool. Of course, apparently people in NY disagree, so what do I know? Not trying to hate on a local business, I just don’t understand the selling point.

Is there anywhere locally to buy these jeans, or do you have to go through Barneys NY? I would like to look at some up close.
It would make some sense to have a local retailer that sold them at a bit of a discount price since they are not being shipped all over the place. Buying them from a NYC retailer defeats the purpose of having a local product.

I updated the post above with local options for purchasing Raleigh Denim.

Can’t wait to check out the women’s line… I almost broke down and asked Holly if I could try on the boys’ just for the heck of it.  I can’t afford them, but I can covet them.

  • Lisa Jeffries08/05 10:58 AM

Just my $0.02, but I emailed them way back when NewRaleigh did the last feature on them to inquire about the process and the cost for the custom design and never even got a response. From a business standpoint, I would think it’d be a lot more profitable to sell to the locals who are willing to buy (or at least consider), before hoping that anyone in NYC who is not already overwhelmed by the tremendous selection available in the City gets to their line.

I do not want to speak for Raleigh Denim because I am not an employee or an affiliate of the company, but I have seen the jeans up close and personal.  I know each pair is created by hand, the cuts are crazy hot, there is a ridiculous amount of detail put into each pair, and they are meticulously looked over for any imperfections.  I wish I could tell you more about the denim, etc…but I do not know anything more for a fact.  I have never owned a pair of jeans like this, but I can imagine that some of the cost is attributable to the above.  I think there has not been a lot of information out there regarding these things that contribute to the cost, so maybe this is something RD could talk more about.

Owning my own business, I can appreciate how and why they are building the business the way they do.  They are an inspiration to me.  Congrats again on Steven Allen, and Barneys!

Not bragging but I have a pair.  They’re great and get compliments all the time (too bad said compliments are for the jeans and not me though.)  You can tell a lot of work went into them and they are unlike other jeans I have.  With a mom that retired from Wrangler in Greensboro I wish we still made more jeans and clothing here in NC.

$280 is not a ridiculous price for a beautiful, handcrafted piece of premium clothing, and every piece of Raleigh Denim I’ve seen definitely falls into that category. It’s the difference between saving all the dollars you could spend at Forever 21 or Banana Republic to spend on a quality item that will last forever and that you will wear forever… and spending much smaller amounts of money on five or six pairs of jeans that are unremarkable.

There are many, many people that would never spend $280 on jeans and that’s fine. But there are people who appreciate a beautiful, handcrafted piece of clothing and are happy to pay for all the knowledge and work behind those jeans.

  • smitty08/09 09:40 PM

Jenn, hate to burst your bubble, but no pair of jeans will last forever.  Anyone who spends $280 on a pair of jeans is about as shallow as an Arizona puddle.

  • gd08/10 06:12 AM

Wow smitty is quick to judge someone based on what they choose to spend his/her money on.  Way to go Smitty and your self richeousness.

  • arthurb308/10 07:16 AM

To each their own. Just like someone will spend tons of money of a tendy IPhone so they can talk and surf the net in public so that it will be obsolete in a few years or spend 40k on a car that they will get rid of in a few years or to look trendy when they are passing through Glenwood South, there are some people that like spending lots of money of shoes and clothing. So to each their own crazy thing they are willing to spend money on….

  • reed08/10 10:33 AM

I would rather be around someone who spends $280 on a pair of jeans than someone who uses the phrase “shallow as an Arizona puddle.”

  • smitty08/10 12:26 PM

Good news!  They are on sale for $113.23.  No really.  http://www.barneys.com/Keats/500107762,default,pd.html

  • Lisa Jeffries08/10 12:53 PM

$113 is a great price point… amazing to see that deep of a sale. Makes me wonder what wholesale pricing and markup is! But really, dry clean only? Not happening.

  • Megan Wood08/11 02:07 PM

I own a pair. I don’t normally spend anywhere near that much money on jeans! I am as someone put it earlier in this thread a “regular” person. However, these aren’t normal jeans, they are extraordinary jeans, and I promise you, my jeans were worth every single cent!

They fit phenomenally, the denim is of exceptional quality, and are not a merely a “fad” jean. They are here to stay, and I am already saving up for my next pair.
Plus, it feels good to support local people and local business!
